A couple of months ago, I snapped up 2 Gs for a return trip to HKG, for 120k miles each plus £510 in taxes.

I learned today that with tickets to HKG, I would've been much better off booking 2 singles, rather than a return, due to the cap on taxes on the return leg. Upon checking, the HKG to LHR taxes would be £15 ish rather than £139 each.

Should I ring up, cancel and rebook? I know that I'd incur the change fee (is it £30 each or £35?) but the bigger risk that I can see is the availability of those Gs. Currently there are 2 Gs available at least for my outbound date, but none on the return. Would the cancellation instantly return those Gs? I don't want to lose out on UC to save £250....

What would you do?

You could hold off an wait until there are G's on the return leg, that way you don't screw yourself out of both the cancellation fee and the return in UC! Otherwise I'd personally chalk it up to just bad luck.

If it were me I would leave the booking as it is. Lesson learnt.

I would not risk my UC seats. If I did not manage to re-book in UC I would dread that journey in Economy. In fact I would probably cancel the trip in entirity. And that is not worth the saving.

Just look at the current cash price of the ticket and then congratulate yourself on how much you are saving

I agree with Maximus. Treat it as a lesson learned.
I'm sure after I have booked my trips there are many ways that come up where I could have done it cheaper but I don't look back. I take the deal I'm happy with at the time. As an early purchaser I'm sure I miss out on a lot.
If I had two G's I wouldn't let them go.

No No don't cancel your already booked flights. Anything could happen as they hit that cancellation button and then you would be so upset :-O

I agree with what dickydot said, be pleased with your original purchase price and don't look back.

Ive got a flight booked with JetBlue from Sarasota to JFK for March. When I booked it last August I was pleased with the fares, then they had a flash sale and basically at that time I could have saved about £125. However now I am really looking smug, coz the fares have trebled in price due to limited availability and I'd have to pay £260 more at this moment.

I play about with hotel accommodation but never my booked flights.

I agree with the others too, leave it be and put it down to experience. You've put those miles to good use and only paid a few hundred in taxes versus what a revenue fare would cost. Just look forward to your flights and no gooey cheesy pasta!

Thank you all, I knew that v-flyer could put my mind to rest ;-)

You can't win'em all, as they say, and I am really pleased with the original price for an UC return so that's the important thing. I might, though, keep an eye on the G availability, and if new ones do become available on my dates, I will book those before cancelling the existing booking.

A lesson learned, though! And I think there is such a thing as knowing too much!

You said "I don't want to lose out on UC to save £250.... "

You have answered your own question. :)

Take it on the chin, it's all booked, relax and don't worry about it.

Woohoo I've spotted some Gs on both days, and have rebooked 2 one-ways. For the HKG to LHR leg, when I phoned up the default currency an agent quoted me in was GBP, and it was over £200 per person. Since I couldn't convince her to double check, I hang up and called back, where upon insisting to be quoted in HKG, it was HKG170 each, which is about 15 quid.

So after a bit of faffing, and paying £60 of cancellation fees, we will be on our way again on the same flights, saving £280 in the process (there will be two of us travelling). I thought I'd share this to fellow v-flyers so that you will all remember to book HKG redemptions as 2 one-ways, circumstances permitting.

Happy Easter everyone!
