Hi

i have one too, the miles as i understand it are accumulated by spend regardless of how that spend is financed.

If i'm using more than my limit i transfer funds in before the use.

Before you use give them a ring and ask for a limit increase or a temp one, personally never been declined but...

Be very careful overpaying credit cards as some card issuers will now actually charge you for over-paying on your account.

i accidentally paid my black amex card bill twice recently, so went temporarily in to credit. I didn't notice any charge,,,, however when I paid off a credit card balance early (HSBC mastercard) because I was going holiday, i got a nasty charge...

Thanks for the replies.

It's my vat that I want to pay. I'm hoping to literally put it into credit by around £10000 and pay the bill the next day. Hopefully that will be ok?

Thanks again!

I would be careful as MBNA systems may only auth a transaction up to your card limit, you don't want to put a large amount of money on the card only to find you cant get an approval for the transaction.

Hi,

Looked into this myself recently. HMRC may not accept CC, and if they do they may well charge a handling fee.

Looked at getting the Amex card for this reason - Amex is definitely on the not allowed list ..... But still useful for me for business flights, and the occasional Apple purchase for work.

Cheers,

I had a situation recently which lead me to ring Amex. The credit limit you are given is just that, the amount they will lend you in 30 days, regardless of whether you pay it off or not. I had a situation where I cleared the balance a few days after a large purchase and needed to make another. Despite my balance being £0 my credit card was refused. It took a call to Amex to up my limit and explain but I was totally unaware they (and all CC companies) operate like this. The chargecard works differently.

Well, just got off the phone to them. They said that I can't do it, so will probably have to come up with another idea!

Thanks again!

I paid for a large group holiday on my black AMEX
explained to the company I why I wanted to use the credit card & not pay by debit card (ie to collect miles) & they allowed me to break down the bill to suit my credit limit.
While the fee's cancelled out the miles value, it did finish my first trigger my 2nd E to PE upgrade vouchers -which was the reason for me doing it in the first place.
