Nasty habit I know but does the LHR Clubhouse have a smoking area like LGW Clubhouse and Revivals [?]
Never actually visited the LHR Clubhouse yet as I'm usually only in Upper on UK bound flights.
Cheers

The missus smokes and she just wanders off to the other side of the clubhouse where all the smoking tables are. Doesn't seem to be any real segregation per se - as in no walls separating...

Yes Revivals is the same - I must admit I did feel guilty when I lit up where I was sat in the corner and someone did move away even though had asked first and was told I could smoke there.
At least at the LGW Clubhouse there is some partitioning between the smoking area (Drawing room) and the rest of the lounge.

Most of the smokers stroll over to the TV area next to the reception for a cigarette.
Maybe something for them to do for the new LHR Clubhouse.
Thanks,
Richard

I'm a NS myself but it really annoys me when people start tutting and glaring when someone lights up in a smoking area. I encourage my wife to blow smoke their way but she's too nice [}:)]

Given I'm a chainer, I seek out the smoking areas

At LHR, it's pretty much everything directly in front of the bar (quite a big area). If in doubt, look for the tables with the red ashtrays, which are a bit of a giveaway.

So you would be happy for someone to shoot up heroin in the clubhouse as well then? Both are drugs, the difference of course is that heroin effects the druggie only, where the smoking druggies pollute the air of everyone else causing secondary smoke cancer. The smoke cming unfiltered off the end of a ciggarette has more toxins in it that the filtered end in the druggies mouth. [:(!][:(!]

So given the problems with caffeine addiction, processed foods (crisps etc), not even mentioning alcohol.
If a flyer wants to avoid the associated risks of passive smoking they can do one of a couple of things 1. dont go near a smoking area in the first place, 2.go stand outside and be killed by the jet fumes and car exhaust.

You are so wrong. Caffine addiction processed foods, and alcohol effect the person in the main, not the innocents who have to breath in the toxins produced by smokers (druggies)
Tobacco smoke contains over 4000 chemicals in the form of particles and gases. Many potentially toxic gases are present in higher concentrations in sidestream smoke than in mainstream smoke and nearly 85% of the smoke in a room results from sidestream smoke. The particulate phase includes tar (itself composed of many chemicals), nicotine, benzene and benzo(a)pyrene. The gas phase includes carbon monoxide, ammonia, dimethylnitrosamine, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide and acrolein. Some of these have marked irritant properties and some 60 are known or suspected carcinogens (cancer causing substances). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the USA has classified environmental tobacco smoke as a class A (known human) carcinogen along with asbestos, arsenic, benzene and radon gas.

if there was an area labelled "Heroin Shoot Up Corner" then I'd have absolutely no problems with people shooting up in that corner (this presupposes the legality of such an area). Similarly I don't really object to people drinking alcohol at the bar - it seems clearly marked for that purpose. I would have problems with people who believe that that their will should supplant laws implemented by democratically elected governments - but then I do have this thing about free will. Or did you misunderstand that my posting was in defence of people smoking in clearly marked smoking areas?

yes, sorry [:o)] I thought you were defending the smoking habits throughout the clunhouse not a specific area
I hope I made myself clear that if the druggies want to smoke, I am happy for them to kill themselves, so long as they do it in a designated area which holds the smoke in that area and does not affect others who do not want to die of secondary smoke inhalation.
yes, I agree about free will so lomg as this does not impart on others.

Gentlemen.
This is a Virgin discussion board - I do not really want to come the heavy handed moderator unless I have to, BUT please could we keep our discussions on topic.
We seem very quickly to be building a great forum which should continue to grow. If we go down the route of the OMNI forum on Flyertalk we will lose that spirit.
Lots of us have view about smoking, drugs, crime etc but PLEASE can we limit our views to matters Virgin.
Thanks
Nick

Alan
I accept that, as the original post was about smoking, your comments were on topic - what I wanted to prevent was a spiraling argument that degenerated into insults. We have avoided that so far and I would like to keep it that way.
It is a Virgin board and my only intention was to try and draw a line - no posts have been deleted or censored.
Nick.
BTW The middle button above your post (the pencil) is a very powerful antidote for fingers that go too fast on the keyboard. You can edit your posts to correct any spelling mistakes.

Hi Guys,
I was just about to jump in on this one when Nick saved me the trouble, however I am pleased that you both pulled back, sometimes as a moderator you have to cut in early otherwise things can quickly turn nasty and that spoils it for everyone, not least the people directly involved.
Enjoy!

James, you don't have to apologise, you didn't come close to starting a war.
A couple of valued co-members got a little heated, and maturely resolved the situation.
Nick and I were just being paternal, we all love this board and will not see it or it's reputation damaged, not that that was about to happen in this case, but that's what we're paid for (not)!

Just kidding pix.

Well I'm glad we're all still friends

.
As a smoker too, I knew about LGW and LHR, but what about the US clubhouses, do any of them alllow you have a tab. I know (old) JFK, EWR and BOS don't, what about the others?
At least JFK and BOS have bars in the airport you can smoke in, EWR means an about turn and all the way back out to the front.

The only one I've been in (SFO) doesn't - no smoking *anywhere* in the airport, inlcuding the normal bars - once you're past security, no smokes til Laaaarndan. But then again, that is California for you [:(]

You are right when you say "that is California for you" State laws prohibit smoking in any buildings to which the public have access!

I love the signs as you enter a hotel floor "warning - some rooms on this floor are smoking rooms and you may be exposed..." etc.
