I only flew once on a BA 742, it didn't have PTVs. The interior was really shabby, faded and tattered 1970's airline chic. I seem to remember sitting on the upper deck which was all economy - I guess that was just a configuration thing with BA. There was almost a fight between the passenger to my left and the one in front of him, who insisted on reclining his seat before they'd even closed the airplane door. The only shabbier plane I've ever been on was a Northwest DC-10.
It is amazing when you see old B&W tv footage of transatlantic flights in the sixties - just how much room they had in economy - BUT the relative cost of tickets was phenomenal. I have read somewhere that the cost of a ticket was as much as it it today - when average annual salaries were less than £2K !!
