Have they re-introduced metal cutlery yet? Now the rules have changed theres no reason for them not to do it. The steak that is so berated here may be ok with a metal knife!!
I think true 'silver service' would look a little out of place in the chic modern UCS.

Metal cutlery hasn't yet returned to VS. Two key reasons (presumably amongst others):
1) They sold off the new sets of UC cutlery after 9/11's ban on it - I believe LRoM has a nice set at home...

2) Even those that are left (or even the previous ones) cannot be used, as they're only allowed to provide cutlery that conforms to a new CAA specification. If it is coming back (I hope so), they'll be making new sets up to match the specs that were issued.

I wonder what the cost difference is between using plastic cutlery and discarding it and going through a design and purchase process for metal cutlery which is then washed and re-used?
Have to agree that a metal knife would make the steak easier to cut (I guess that's why most of use metal knives at home!).

well judging by what Ive heard about the steak, VS need to offer chainsaws to cut through it!

There is also the 'running cost' to take into account. Rather than simply discard the cutlery with other waste, it would need to be sorted, separately off-loaded, washed, sterilised and repacked. Replacements would need to be available for those items lost or stolen (or on Ebay:)). The final running cost has to be the extra weight on the aircraft, although if this were a major issue, VA have plenty of other excess weight that could be trimmed (and I don't mean CC or Mcuth.[:o)])

It wont be coming back we are trying to find ways of making our Aircraft lighter. For E.G the upper class flowers and vase that is on the bar will no longer be there from the 02 SEP also the Red Satin cushions that are on each seat in upper wil not be there also.
All to make the weight go down. So no more metal for us I dont think.

Oh you had to go reminding me about this didn't you! I can understand the need to keep the weight down with the crazy fuel prices out there! I'm so glad I have a fuel card for my car after being fleeced for 102.9/l on the M4 a couple of days ago!
Thanks,
Richard

I'm a bit upset about the cussions. For sleeping I'm very much a cussion man - one is never enough!!
this wont make me sleep easier - especially on those darn "Good Night Flights"

As for the proper metal knives and forks, the VS website still claims "You'd be forgiven for thinking you were in a restaurant, not a plane."
Does anyone know a restaurant that insists on plastic knives and forks?

;)

No metal cutlery? No vases? No cushions? Good grief, they'll be ditching those heavy old UC suites next and replacing them with airbeds...

I use that to make my white pillow bigger - I won't be able to sleep! [V]

Great idea. And what about removing more of the meal choices too. Oh, and the sleeper suits will take up a fair bit of weight. We could even load fewer bottles of booze and not bother with glass: plastic is much lighter. And we could probably dispense with a flight attendant or two in Upper Class as well, that will save a few quid in fuel costs.
Upper Class is being "enhanced" by Virgin. Not good.

Most UC cabins are not full, so if you want a 2nd pillow, just get one from an empty seat, or in the overhead compartment.

Oh no! I, like others of relatively advanced years I suspect, need to sleep well propped up after eating and drinking, to stave off heartburn[:(]
However, somebody told me that these new UCS beds can be converted into a chair, so perhaps that could be the answer;)

I like the flowers, they make me forget i am on aircraft, and the satin cushions are nice extras! I can't believe that the flowers cost more than a tiny tiny tiny tiny percent of the margin of a flight.

Blackcat...
Next they'll stop carrying passengers.... That'll certainly keep the wait down... Especially when trying to board with the scrum....

Claptrap - certainly the weight "excuse" anyway.
If you take all the satin cushions, and the flowers from the bar, it can't weigh more than a few kilos. Airlines don't weigh each passenger, so the couple of kilos here will hardly be noticeable.
Granted, it is about saving money though - and "reducing weight" is a thinly veiled excuse. Not having to launder the cushion covers for one, and not having to pay keep the flowers on the bar, will pinch a few more pennies.
I can't help feeling that someone in VS has lost the plot, and thinks penny-pinching is the best/only way to weasel more profit out of the old bird.
Cheers,
Mike

In comparison, BA is actually making its J product better. Methinks the bean counters now have far too much influence on VS.

Guess I'll be offloaded the next time I fly VS..I certainly weigh more than a vase and some pillows (probably a couple of vases and an awful lot of pillows!

Oxygen is very ehavy to carry, lets remove all pressurisation from the planes, along with the interiors and just make everyone wear masks and sit in a near hollow tube without toilets.
Seriously though, has VS been taken over by Ryanair?

Ok guys,,comapring VS UC to Ryan air maybe going a little to far,it's a flower vase,I mean the only thing it's good for is re-filling a couple of V-Flyers glasses..
The pillows..we'll now that stupid.
Oh and instead of worrying about the flowers, how about having a quick chat with revenue managment, they are going to end up cost VS $4k next week, which I think would of covered the cost of a flower vase.

Ok so UC has now lost the lite-bites, cushions, flowers on the bar, metal cuttlery, VIE products (moisturiser etc) from the ameniety kit, the polo's, the polo's (so gutted about that needs a 2nd mention). What else can they possibly do to "add-value"? [:(!]
If they want to cut weight how about making the duty-free service pre-order only? That way you are only carrying exactly what you need on the flight - i can't believe the lovely little red cusions weigh more then two or three bottles of gin.

Next it will be "Would you like a glass of red or white sir?"
What are the vintages?
"Tesco's err,, Virgins own specila vintage Red or white"
Oh. Could I have another glass?
"Sorry sir, only one glass of red or white per UC passenger"

a box of wine would be lighter than a bottle of wine with the same volume
