The FAQ explains how to add a simple URL but alternatively check out Pete's explanation for adding self sizing photo's on this thread.

Just a small point, if you're linking to something externally, please make sure the image is small enough (ie: about 500px wide) to not completely screw-up the screen formatting before linking to it in a thread...
