what awful news.

Probably best to wait for official news sources before commenting further on the a.net thread - I've searched the news wires and can find nothing at this time.

RIP.

Rich.

A statement has been issued by the company. If you wish I can post a copy on Monday when I next have access to it. In the meantime I feel it would be inappropriate for me or any other member of staff to comment.

My thoughts are with his family and friends.

Thanks for the offer, G-VOPS. [y]

IF you're allowed, I'm sure it would be useful to everyone to have VS' official statement here. I'm sure the press will be manipulating the story as usual, so some facts would help.

A Trinidad newspaper already seem to have more information on it - the story's been posted here (including his name [:0][V])

I do think the Paper publishing his name is out of order[:(][:(!] I suppose from that, that the family must have been informed but it's still a bit quick off of the mark isn't it.

So shocking.

He was FO on my flight to Miami in Jan and I was talking to him.

My thoughts are with his family and loved ones and may he rest in peace.

John

A very tragic story, he must have been deeply troubled to end his life that way, may he rest in peace. Our deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends.

The way media and people in general deal with suicide is very much culturally related, here in the UK we have a policy of not publishing suicides however other countries across Europe and the world differ greatly. There's several schools of thought such as not talking about it, but research has shown that's crap. In fact this just shows how anyone can suffer from mental health problems and if it encourages someone to talk about it and subsequently get help then that can't be seen as a bad thing.

Have just returned on the delayed VS52 (G-VROY) from Tobago which was held up for 24 hours whilst a new crew was shipped in. The newspaper report seems to tell the story as I understood it. Although nothing official was said to us the captain on the flight refered to a traumatic day for the airline.

My sympathies go to the family, friends and colleagues of the person involved.

Thanks for the first hand update vwaz.

Suicide is a horrible thing. Firstly for the poor individual who was driven to take the action, and secondly for those around them, who not only have to deal with the tragedy, but may also find themselves asking why it happened, and what they could have done to prevent it.

May I add my condolences to the family of the pilot, and those all who knew him.

Nick
