Does anybody know if VS demand at least 6 month validity on one's passport after one's intended return date from USA?

If they do, why? This can only be a VS requirement at the US Embassy website categorically requires no onward validity for a UK passport holder.

I know that an airline is responsible for pax who are refused entry and that it therefore makes perfect sense not to take them in the first place, but this (alleged) requirement is far and away beyond the US immigration laws.
