Reduction of Upper Class Baggage.

Effective 01 June 2004
the Government's Health and Safety Executive body are stipulating that:
No bags will be loaded onto aircraft that weigh more than 32kgs
(this applies to all airlines flying in and out of the UK).

This measure is being taken to reduce the number of back injuries suffered by the baggage handlers.
Therefore, from this date, the baggage allowance for Upper Class passengers and flying club gold members travelling on Transatlantic, Caribbean and Nigerian routes will be 3 bags weighing no more than 32kgs each. All other routes remain unaffected at a total weight of 30kg.

NB Currently UC passengers on piece system are allowed 3 pieces @ 40Kg

There will be a few celebs frowning at this, but 3 bags @ 32KG is still a LOT of luggage.

I was advised by a non-VS staff check-in agent when flying to Vegas last Christmas that he would not check-in anything over 32kg, FC AU or not, due to H&S. However, the new rules seems very sensible. What would be of more use to me is an increase in cabin baggage weight for AU members flying in PE. One item yes but 8kg or so would be useful and not unsafe?

We've frequently giggled about this - the Au gets you another bag so each UC Au used to be able to check 160kg! Excessive normally - of course the automated booking systems tend not to warn of baggage allowance clashes, like flying to ANU with VS and then flying on with an airline who claims to only allow 1 x 20kg each (on the way back - they were happy with 2 x 15 on the way out - cheers Liat!).
