It's for the power to Noise cancelling headphones.
If you plug your own regular headphones in, they won't use it.
If you plug your own NC headphones in, they'll have their own power supply (battery), so again - won't use it.
If you use VS' own Upper Class headphones, they come with two male connectors - one for the audio, the other to power the noise cancelling element of the headphones.
The NC properties of the VS supplied ones aren't great, but certainly better than nothing. The design is used by several airlines - you can use BD/AC Business Class (Noise Cancelling) headphones in the VS socket configuration without any problems.
