As I'm planning on doing this while the others go look at plane graveyards.. any thoughts on whether to prepurchase or just turn up at the airport?

Decker,
At the moment (with HP) it's around $170 + taxes to return the same day. Not sure what they'd offer at LAS but the last (and only) time I've turned up to buy on the day at the airport with HP was from SJC - LAS.
They wanted nearly $400 to travel (returning in 2 days time) - but did offer an upgrade to first for $500 all-in (i think - from memory)] if I wanted it.
Personally, I'd book in advance, but that's purely based on that one experience.

Decker,
About GBP116 on Southwest (I know, no miles or TPs), with many flights throughout the day. About 4 hours driving time each way.

Thanks all - wish I'd read that before Chuck - just booked HP at £124... online it had gone up to $229.

It's not that it will take forever to get there,AZ is not on daylight savings time.
Southwest has a flight that 1 hr and 5 mins, leave LAS at 9.50,gets in at 12.
the flight back could leave at say 5.20pm and you'll be back by 5.35pm,.
Fast service !

Arghhhhhhhh
I wasn't showing ANY direct flights on Expedia hence the compromise. Now of course my flight is not changeable... could suggest client pays cancellation and I book new ticket I supppose? So as not direct I was showing 4 hours....
