US relaxes foreign ownership rules on airlines

The US government unveiled plans on Wednesday to relax rules limiting
foreign investment in US airlines, a move that it said could boost access to
capital and improve cross-border co-operation between carriers.

Because they hope if some foreign companies buy them they may stop going bankrupt? Or filling for bankruptcy protection at least.

Hopefully this means that SRB can pay more than 20% (?) of the investments.

VS-EWR:

There is a better article in today's Wall Street Journal about this issue but I only get the paper copy.

It speaks of the possiblity of a foreign company being able to have a controlable stake.

I am not familiar with the finer points of company laws - especially US ones [:I] but if this goes ahead, presumably there is nothing to stop SRB buying an existing airline and simply rebranding?

Or is that being too simplistic?

If that's the case, mcbenjamin might find himself working for Virgin America [^]

So if anyone wants an airline . . .

FLYi, Inc. Files For Voluntary Chapter 11 Reorganization

Maybe SRB can buy Indy really cheap (and the operaing certificate).

Yeah, there's this small article that says Branson may take this opportunity to start it. They have A319s, he may not want the CRJs though.

"According to The Financial Times, Virgin America's Richard Branson is likely to bid for Independence Air's assets. FLYi added that the auction process is expected to begin within the forthcoming 60 days."

The Independent, appropriately enough, have picked up on the story too.

The Independent are normally pretty swiftly about moving their articles to the paid-only archive, so you might have to look at http://news.independent.co.uk/business/news/article327363.ece sooner rather than later. I know people are strong on respecting copyright so I certainly won't quote the whole lot, but let me fair-use a couple of paras:

"The San Francisco-based company ((Virgin America)) is understood to be looking closely at Independence's operating licence and other assets as a way to bring its fledgling airline into the skies by the first half of next year."

"While some rivals would like Independence to sink completely because it has forced them to dramatically cut their own fares, others view it as attractive because of the popular east coast routes it flies and because its base in Washington's Dulles airport is regarded as a prime spot."

Best,
Chris

Benjamin, Chris, Nick:
I'd declare that a mouthful. The clock you hear ticking is SRB's pocketwatch which he is now checking ... "Ah, when shall I announce the VA launch?"

I agree. Could be quite significant. Now, if we can locate our wonderful SFO friend Claire, well, wouldn't that be great?[^]

Well, it would be great if SRB picks up FLYi, but even better if he also employs Ben & Claire ;)

And if I were to be a CH (Blue Room or the VAmerica Room) czar I would allow VF Au, Ag, and Black but lets keep that on the DL. :)
