Having only flown to the US several times in PE my baggage allowance has always been 2 pieces at 32kgs. I am about to fly out to Mumbai in PE and the allowance is only ONE PIECE at 20kgs!!! Does anyone know why and how strict they are about this. We are flying on to Goa and rather than go with the terrible direct charters (we flew Excel last year who were great but they only lasted one season) we are getting less allowance than the premium seats on direct charters.

Some parts of the world use the piece concept (ie x bags of 32 kg) where as some use an overall weight concept (xKG). This link will give you some more info.

The 32kg is set as the maximum that a baggage handler can pick up, (throw, stamp on, loose, kick and drop) safely

I believe they're pretty strict on the India routes.

This link provides more info. on the excess charges, but the Indian routes have a weird calculation:

Flights to/from South Africa, India, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia and the UK use the weight system. Excess baggage charges are based on the below percentages of the highest normal direct adult one way Economy Class fare (W class***) irrespective of the fare paid by yourself, and are per kg excess.

Between South Africa, India, China, Hong Kong, Japan and UK - 1.5%
Between Australia and Hong Kong - 1.5%
Between Australia and UK - 1%

- So you'll need to look up the Full Y fare, work out 1.5%, multiply by the # of kg's you'll be over - and that's your charge [:0][:?]
