Checking in golf bags

Just booked a reward flight for my mum and dad to MCO next November from MAN. Both are keen golfers so they will be taking their golf bags. Having just spoken to Virgin I'm still confused though...

VS say you can take 1 suit-case and 1 golf bag at no extra cost as long they are both under 32Kg. If you take 2 suit-cases and a golf bag then you pay 50% excess on the golf bag (that's £40 each way).

My question is, is this per person? As there's 2 of them flying (in economy) can they take a suit-case each and 1 golf bag without paying any baggage excess, bearing in mind all econ pax can check-in 2 x 32Kg of luggage [?] My dad is also using my supplementary Silver account if that makes any difference

Thanks and Regards

It's per person, James. I have friends that did the same last summer.

Basically, they class the golf bag as one of your two luggage pieces - so each person has 2x32kg in their allowance. Your parents can each take 1 x 32kg suitcase + 1 x golf bag (under 32kg).

As with all of these things, the airport staff can often 'forget' to apply the charges and they certainly won't charge you any more that what is published.
Take them along and see. I recently flew with BA who quoted me a similar amount over the phone for my Golf Bags when I had 2 cases. Got to the airport and hey presto, no charge
