I'm aiming to be in Sydney for New Year as part of a RTW trip. I've been looking at a few hotels to get some idea of prices (expecting them to be v.high) but most of them do not have availability for the 5 days around new year.

Does anyone know whether this might be because they are fully booked already, in which case I'll have to get a move on or do the hotels hold back the rooms until later in the year?

Thanks

I was in Sydney for New Year just passed. I shared the same problem even though I was booking during the 1st week of January 2006.

I ended up staying at the Travelodge on Wentworth Ave which was of a resonable standard. The Travelodge chain in Australia is thankfully a lot different from it's namesake in the UK....:D

They still have rooms available at some of their Sydney properties for this New Year, check their site out and book quickly for wherever you choose to stay.

Also, If you wish to get yourself a good viewing point in the Circular Quay, Rocks or Botanical Garden area's - Prepare yourself for a minimum 12 hour stakeout. You need to be in these area's by no later than 12.00 midday.

All bags are searched and only limited numbers are now allowed into these area's for security reasons. This has only recently been changed over the last couple of years.

Once your in, no passouts are allowed so make sure you take refreshments. These area's are also alcohol free.....[:0]

Have a great time but watchout for the sun....[y]

Good thinking - I'm doing the same. Me and the missus fly out on 28 Dec...
I've booked a Club room at the Intercontinental - the high floor Club has amazing views of the bridge and harbour, and of course has plenty to keep us from being thirsty! Can't wait...........................

Hmmm... Oddly, there are no G seats yet loaded for January 2008, for returning from Hong Kong/Sydney on the VS201.
Last one is on 31 Dec... phoned Premier and no knowledge there end of why this is. They couldn't give me a seat or a reason... puzzling.

Can we cynically guess that if they expect to be sold out they won't load ANY G seats? ;)

Many thanks for the suggestions and advice. We're booked in at the Travelodge in Philip Street which looks to be in a pretty good location.

Cheers
