Why does coverage of aircraft incidents increase the days before my flight?

Also, once an airline has an incident, the press tend to report every tiny snippet, no matter how trivial, thinking it constitutes an airline in trouble...

Nah, I'm here all the time and FlyerTalk - definitely feels like an increase. I'm not that worried.

I always seem to find that after something "big" in the news (ie the QF 380) then quite often a lot of smaller incidents which usually would be ignored, get reported.
