Have I made a schoolboy error?

Booked to go to Dubai in 2 weeks - however I've just realised that I'll be there during Ramadan. Am I likely to be a tad hungry and thirsty during my stay? I'm more concerned that my 8 yr old son gets enough water to drink during the day.

Any experiences? I'm staying at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel if that helps.

No you will not. You will need to be a little sensitive not to eat or drink in the street, but in the hotels you will be fine.

As long as you are in a "Western-ised" Hotel, which you are, then you will be fine, as long as you stay within the Hotel (or visit another Western-ised hotel for food & drink).

Come to think of it - purely from my experience at work with Muslim colleagues who are fasting at present - the restaurants in Dubai may well operate as normal. My [Muslim] colleagues who are fasting are happy to sit round the same table as us in the canteen at lunch and watch us eat & socialise with us. (They then visit the prayer room to pray, as required).

In the hotels, eating is fine but I think you still need to be sensitive elsewhere, even in Dubai;)

You'll be fine. We went last year and found it find. Screens will be put around the entrance to the restaurants during the day but they will still be running the same. You may find a couple of the smaller ones shut but most of them will be open.

However, if you do go a shopping centre, all the coffee shops etc will be closed. I was desperate for a drink after a heavy shopping centre and was in Deira City Centre, so just popped into Carrefour and purchased a small bottle of water and quickly went to the toilet to have drink the bottle. (I know doesn't sound the most hygienic). If you do happen to go on one of the tour buses, they will sell you water on it but be careful when/where you drink it. You can get away with it on the open road, but as soon as you go around the town/building sites etc, just pop it away.

It's a great time to go as things in the evening liven up loads and the restaurants and shops seem to stay open so much later than usual.

Lynnewob is right about the evenings - During Ramadan, the evenings take on a whole new significance. Get a snooze in the afternoon then go out late and soak up the local atmosphere and culture [y]
