I've been lurking for a little while and love the whole forum, very interesting! Anyways, I'm going to the UK Nov 1st and to rent a mobile phone. I've searched online and found a few companies but wanted to know if anyone could recommend a reliable service. TIA!

How long are you over here for and whose paying ? If not for very long and you're paying, it may be easier and cheaper to pop into a Carphone Warehouse and buy a cheap "pay as you go" phone.

IMHO, you would be just as well to buy a PAY AS YOU GO mobile - They will cost you £50 - £100 and then you buy top up cards. I do the same when I visit the US - Renting a UK mobile phone will leave you with a big bill

If you have a decent tri- or quad-band phone, just buy a SIM card at Carphone Warehouse or some other outlet! That's what my colleagues do. No need to buy a new phone.

I am only going for a week and it's not business so I just wanted something cheap to use while driving (in case I get lost). I'll check out the carphone warehouse, thanks!

Well if you're only planning to use it in case of emergency just use your own!

Do remember to divert incoming calls to Voicemail though.

Just make sure your handset will work in the UK though as the US mobile phone networks use a different frequency. You will need a tri-band handset (check with your operator to see if your handset will work in the UK/Europe)
If you handset will work in the UK and making sure your handset/SIM is not locked to your local home network, you could also just buy a pay as you go UK SIM card and pop it in your own handset too. Virgin Mobile do one for £10 which includes £5 of calls
