Zurich vs Geneva

Hi all,

Currently planning a citybreak away to ease away those New Year back-to-work blues and we're pondering adding Switerland to the "countries visited" list. However, which city out of the two mentioned above would people recommend for a long weekend away?

Might be a case of apples and oranges, but people's views and opinions on what to do in either city would be appreciated!

Cheers,

Darryl

I've never visited Zurich but have (unfortunately) visited Geneva. I wouldn't recommend Geneva as I've heard some good things about Zurich and it seemed to offer little more than cow - bells.;)

OK, that was a little harsh, but on the whole it was a pretty dull holiday.

Been to both and to Bern - personally if I was planning a long weekend city break then I wouldnt choose Switzerland - unless I was going ski-ing or opening a bank account!!

Dont know where youve been but I always enjoy a long weekend in Prague - much more fun!!

Yeah, unless you're really set on it, I wouldn't go to Switzerland either. I'd recommend either Berlin or Helsinki for a city break, although I'm not too sure about the latter at this time of year.

My Sister-in-Law lives near Geneva, so we get there about once or twice a year. I prefer to visit in the summer when the weather is hot. IMHO it only has the Lake to recommend it, there are some lovely villages along the lake shore and you can catch a ferry across to the French side.

If we didn't have family there, we probably wouldn't go at all. I would prefer Saltzburg for a short city break :D

Go to both a lot through work. Agree with other posts.
There are places better than Switzerland in Germany, France and Austria that are much cheaper as well. Only up side of Z&G are the cheap flights with Easyjet.

Its a very pleasant city - some nice bars and restaurants, the Prater Big Wheel ( featured in Orson Welles "The third Man") along with the Prater fun fair, plenty of tea dances and waltzing, sachertorte, an excellent Cathedaral with a spire climb and great views - yeah, its a good city for a good weekend!! For a longer trip its worth combining Salzburg and Innsbruck - or Prague!!

Thanks for the comments, everyone. Might consider Vienna now that the seed has been planted!
