I am in Shanghai right now! Arrived in PVG on Thursday, went to CAN the same night through SHA. Back to SHA last night, leave to SIN on Monday with SIA.
Shanghai is keep struggling with supplying enough high quality (4 or 5 stars) hotel rooms due to the increacing demand every single year. Although they are building so many hotels and doing that so quick, still can't meet the demand.
Ten years ago, I use to stay in Hilton (built in 1989). Although it still provides good service, it is aging too much now. I only stayed once last year, probably won't back to there again.
If you prefer to stay in the east side of the river (Pudong area), Grand Hyatt is the best. I believe it is still the highest hotel in the world, and the lobby is on the 53rd floor! Get yourself a room at 87th floor, you will love it!
If you don't like the height, try Shangri-La. The new building behind the existing Shangri-La hotel is fantastic! Intercontinental Pudong is another good choice, if you are member of priority club.
If you stay in the west side (city centre), I would prefer Four Seasons. The centre location of Four Seasons if prefect. I've been told that The Westin Bund Centre, Radisson Hotel Shanghai New World, and JW Marriott are all very nice, but haven't got chance to try them yet.
Some of my colleagues prefer Marritt Hongqiao, for its good service and particularly becasue its closer to SHA airport.
If you do need to stay in Shanghai for a slightly longer period (more than 2 weeks), go for Hong Kong Plaza Service Apartment is a good idea. The price is very resonable (start from 60 pounds per night per suite) in Shanghai (which hotel price is much higher than most of Chinese cities, only less than Hong Kong). Each suite come with a kitchen which is crucial if you want to make some simple food by yourself (I found its so important to cook a steak for myself after a week in China with all Chinese food, although I love Chinese food).
So, try Grand Gyatt or Four Seasons first, you will enjoy them. And, to add one more important point, almost everyone speaks English in these two places! if you haven't been to China before, you will be surpriced how many staff don't speak proper English in 5 star hotels!
I will back to LHR at the end of next week, but need to travel to PVG again at the end of March.
Keith, origionally I do have a PVG trip from 12-23 May, but my wife need to do a business trip to China at the same time! So I have to delay my one until June. If you come here often (I do 7-8 trips to PVG every year), I am sure we will meet one day!
