Hong Kong Advice ??

Hi All

Im taking my parents for a week to Hong Kong in early November. They are in their mid 70's and good 'ol dad is not able to walk miles having suffered a stroke a couple of years ago.

Whilst I have visited Hong Kong on a couple of rushed work trips Im looking for some advice on a good place to stay as a base to take them around for some sightseeing but also somewhere that will be pleasant to stay in the hotel if neccesary or just walk outside close by (dont want much do I !)

Should I stay on Kowloon side or Hong kong etc etc etc.

Dont mind paying for a good hotel in the £200-£250 a night range

Any advice would be appreciated

Hi Mark,

Try Grand Hyatt Hong Kong (1 Harbour Road, Wanchai) on Hong Kong Island side. November price is about £200 per night (£170 for Friday and Saturday) at the moment.

Have a harbour facing room, and enjoy the night light show (8PM every night?) from the restaurant is perfect. I always walk around that area (obviously in the evening, too busy at daytime) without any problem, very quiet in the night.

Alternatively, you can try next door Renaissance Harbour View Hotel Hong Kong, which normally is cheaper than Grand Hyatt. Don't know why it's showing £250 per night, which makes Grand Hyatt a even better choise!

I am staying at the Intercontinental on Kowloon in May, they have great Harbour views, and very central. Worth a shot.

I stopped here and would second Dominic's advise. Great hotel with probably one of the best views in HK...

It also has a very handy underground link to the bottom of Nathan Rd and the rest of the south of Kowloon.

The service offered by the hotels staff has brilliant, they couldn't do enough for you in all areas...

I always stay in Kowloon, at the Hotel Nikko on Mody Road, which is right next door to the Intercontinental Grand Stanford, and its easy access to everywhere from there by bus or the ferry, also at the Intercontinental the have a great Italian restaurant called The Mistral great food & great service at great prices.

Anyone try the Conrad Hong Kong?

Yes, I stayed in Conrad few years ago. A very good hotel, although I don't really like the location.

My colleague had his business credit card copied in Conrad (when we think backwards, we were sure both boys behind the cash counter did it together), and somebody tried to use a fake one in China to order £3,500 electronics equipment. Result is my colleague couldn't use his business credit card in the next two weeks in China, and we never stayed in Conrad again.

Have you used the spa at the Grand Hyatt? My ex wife runs it (apparently).

No, I haven't. In recent years, our business is moving towards mainland China rather use "agents" in Hong Kong. I only had very short stays (mostly just over night stay) in Hong Kong in recent years. After a typical 3-hour business dinner (and you only arriving hotel at 7pm before that dinner!), I really don't have any energy left to use the spa or other facilities.

Some colleagues still go to Hong Kong or via Hong Kong, as it always been treated as Safe Zoon. I don't like the timing of Hong Kong route (regardless VS or BA), when you land there at 5-6pm, there is very little choice for connection flights to mainland (and why people want to fly south towards Hong Kong first, then turn back to north to China? I still don't understand that). So you probably have to stay overnight, which is normally quite expensive and waste a day (the following day).

My feeling is, as a holiday destination, Hong Kong is ok (although Beijing is more Chinese if you know what I mean), especially if you only stop over on the way to Australia. For business purpose, I prefer to fly to Shanghai (PVG) or Beijing (PEK) directly.

After saying the negative point about Hong Kong route, I may travel via Hong Kong to Sydney in June (and probably will be a round the world business trip).

I've stayed most recently in the Royal Garden in Kowloon. It's right next door to TST station and very accessible. Bit busy with tour groups at times but rooms are nice and price is reasonable.
