On the 13th, my brother and sister-in-law flew from SEA to EWR (Alaska Air, Continental codeshare) and had an unpleasant surprise on board. Both of them travel with bum bags and rarely (read that: never) take them off in transit unless they're going through security. Well, the FA in their section made them both take them off while they were in their seats, which has never happened before.

Not big bags, mind you. I've never seen or heard of this, even on international flights, neither have they. Even on Alaska flights this is a new one.

Anyone know if this was just a strange FA or a policy change? If it's a policy change, what's next, no jackets? I have pockets in my jacket which hold more than either of their modest bum bags!

I have never heard of that, and can't think of any safety issues that would be compromised by them wearing them - what did the FA make them do, put them in the over head lockers?

Were they given any reason?

No reason save 'because I said to,' which is the wrong thing to say to my brother. Hey, if you have a problem with something on a Boeing plane, you probably get to deal with him or someone else in his department. He knows the regs and the rules to a T, and when one flies in his face for no #%%$!! good reason, he gets ticked.

But they removed the bags and stowed them in the overhead to shut the FA up. That lasted until she exited the section; as soon as the seatbelt sign went off, the bags went back on, turned into instant lumbar pads! And then they sealed the bottom of their jackets so the FA couldn't see the straps.

Anyone who's ever deplaned at EWR, with the rush for international flights, knows the folly of leaving anything important in the overheads. Neither of them were that stupid. People grab the wrong stuff all the time, and their briefcases were already under the seats before them, with no more room to stuff anything in.

Although my brother wanted to say a few well-chosen words detailing the (lack of) intelligence this particular FA was born with, chose to keep his mouth shut. He also knows what the FAA and the US courts will hand out for air-rage charges...
