With the Pound hitting a five year low against the Dollar today, I am less inclined to make the US my destination for a pre-Christmas shopping jaunt.

Our once great currency is also suffering badly against the Euro, so I wondered if there are any currencies that it is doing well against?

I am obviously most interested in the destinations that VS flies to, India, Japan, Hong Kong etc. etc. but are there any destinations where I can still get reasonable value for my tourist Pound?

I wonder how many remember Harold Wilson's speech: 'The Pound in your pocket.........'

That was after a devaluation of just 14%

We have now had a creeping devaluation of over 20%
Yet hardly anyone seems to notice .... perhaps Harold was right [:w]

Hang on a second, the dollar to pound value still works out well for people in the UK, it's at the same rate is was 10 years ago and let's face facts, it has been artificially high for the last couple of years.

But it's still a cheap trip when you consider what you get for your pound.

EDIT : Though I do wonder if the VS/BA pricing reflects the drop in the value off the pound..IE pricing in dollars is now cheaper.

I can tell you I damn well notice, Palm Springs compared to May is about 20% more expensive for everything and it hurts!

We are reconsidering our trip because of the drop in dollar rate...I managed to get $2.12 last year by buying in advance through crown currency exchange....I'll be lucky to get above $1.75 this coming year from them and thats a big difference for us as we are always putting everything away especially for our trip. We would never go short of cash so if the rate gets worse we will push our trip forwards so we have more time to save.
I know things are cheaper in the states by and large and there are good deals in the shops just like there are here at the moment , but tickets for theme parks etc have not been affected and neither has the fuel and airport duty which cost nearly £800 on this years booking...these things all add up.

Blimey, wish you'd not mentioned that now - a CPT trip is now on the cards... just booked up Le Quartier Francais in Franschhoek for Saturday 22 November.

The flight times of the 603/604 are superb for a weekend away.

And after a quick check, the price of a VS/BA price is the same...so more money for them

Hadn't the government put a stop to all this hedging[:?][:w][:D]

They seemed to have put a stop to almost anything to do with money - unless its taking tax from you
