New Year in New York

My lord what have I done!?

Our neighbours are landscaping our garden and in return we are taking them skiing in New England for Christmas/new year 2009/10.

We had planned on spending New Years Eve in Boston but while our next door neighbour was half way through the garden he started hinting that really they would rather try New Year in NYC.[:?]

So, I have booked us into Le Parker Meridien for a few nights over new year 09/10 through Vhols - and now having googled 'new years eve in nyc' I am thinking the whole experience is going to be either crushingly hideous or ridiculously expensive (the party at the rainbow room seems to cost $1500 per head![:0]

Any ideas on how to make the best of New Years Eve in New York without having to re-mortgage the house!?

We are various ages 28 - 59 and would like to be able to get a glimpse of Times Square without having to stand outside for 10 hours!

Thanks in advance...

Go and stay at the Renaissance Hotel in Times Square. The restaurant has an awesome view of the square. DL the Elder and I stayed there a few years back and had a great time . Not cheap, but certainly not a re-mortgage.

Thanks for that DL.

I take it you had to pre-book for the restaurant in New York?

Did they have a set menu price or something on NYEve or just the regular choose your own?

We were in NYC for new years eve a few years ago and as it happens also stayed in Le Parker Meridian. For dinner we went to the burger place in the hotel behind reception. They are without doubt the best burgers we have ever had.

Then went out for a few drinks in a bar down the street before heading over to Central Park around 11.30 to watch the fire works which went on for a good 20 minutes. We got back to our room about 1.00am and then watched some of the celebrations on TV in some of the western cities in different time zones.

We decided against Times Square as we went down earlier in the afternoon and you couldn't get near the place even then. Overall it was one of the best nights we have had and I don't think we spent more than $150 for the 3 of us.

By the way I recommend using the pool at the hotel, it has some great views across the park.

How did you find the hotel? Tripadvisor is fairly mixed...

Ah sorry Barnstable I didn't mean to mislead you- it wasn't New Years Eve (Christmas week). If you contact the hotel direct they'll be able to give you an idea of the restaurant prices for NYE. Spectacular views of Times Square from the restaurant though.
