Quito, Equador,any advice?

A mate of mine has just started a new job teaching out in Quito, Equador.
He's there for two years, and a couple of us are thinking about popping over to see him for a week or two sometime next year.
We can fly to Miami with VS,and then onto Quito with AA, but as none of us have never been to South America before I was hoping some of you may have some recommendations on the best time of year to go,and any general advice on do's and dont's.
