Blacky junior loved it and we will def be back for more.did all the same stuff that the wife and I had done in nov like the ESB ,ground zero etc and had the odd night staying in with room service and watching films which I think jr enjoyed the most but alas it was time to get to JFK so we used a hotel car which was more expensive than a yellow cab but didn't drive like a complete prat which seems to be part and parcel of being a cabbie in NY.
So we arrive with hours to spare as my original plan was to go into the oasis lounge and watch the planes but I had this upgrade to UC thing kicking around in my head and knew there was availability after horbury flyer had kindly done a load check for me.
Being so early the check in desks weren't open yet so we went straight to the oasis and paid to get in,it's a comfortable lounge ,nothing special but beats sitting in the terminal so had a couple of drinks and then went back to check in.
Not surprisingly there was no queue as we were still very early and got seen to straight away by a very nice chap all the while thinking about do I or don't I !
Well the words slipped out and I enquired about a cheeky free upgrade but to no avail so asked how much(amount to remain undisclosed)kids read v flyer and they would tell their mother!
I thought about it for about 10 secs before saying yes all the while looking at jr face which started off with an anxious look to finishing with a great big smile so decision made and we would be taking our first ever UC flight.
Had to hang around for the lady on the virgin desk near the entrance to the terminal to come back to work in order to pay her which was a bit of a pain as I was itching to get to the CH but it was only 20 mins or so so I had a few fags out the front.when said lady arrived she was pretty miserable to be honest and didn't even make eye contact or say hello for a good 5 mins while she sorted her phone out and other stuff that they lock away while the desk is unmanned so this is the reason I have knocked a point off the ground staff, done the deed with my card and we were on our way to security with our UC boarding passes proudly in my possession.Gave the oasis a wave goodbye and skipped down the stairs stopping to buy some ciggies and thru to security where we were through quickly as it was very quiet still.
Up the stairs to the CH and offered a little tour as it was our first time here,I have to say that the staff were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble for them and I know people will say they doing their job but they all genuinely seemed to enjoy being there .
I didn't mention the LHR CH staff in the outbound TR but they were fantastic aswell letting us have our photos taken with them and getting pens and books for jr so a big thanks to them also.
So we had a few games of pool ,the ch burger plenty of the red wine and I also had a treatment and a good chat with the girl doing it who was covering for a colleague and who is usually based in heathrow and does training ,she was actually flying back that night on the 46,
I was itching to get on the plane so went down as soon as boarding was called and collected my fags before getting on to uptown girland settling into 2&3g, would prob have preferred window seats to be honest but no biggie and was just very excited to be starting my first UC flight.
Well on to the much talked about UCDS ,I won't go on to much about it but as we all know
There are too many of them in this plane and it feels cramped but I found the suite itself good and comfy in bed or chair mode ,couple of minor niggles like the tray table not shutting properly but overall not too bad at all ,I've yet to fly the old UC so I can't compare it with that .
The service on board was great from the cc to the food and drinks ,I had a nice meal with soup to start, can't remember what it was but I finished it,had a lovely steak ,passed on dessert and had cheese and biscuits all the time being offered refills of my red wine without asking.
So it was time after dinner to frequent the bar,was attended to by a lovely girl who let jr make his very own cocktail non alcoholic of course, enjoyed a couple more glasses of wine and had a good chat with a male crew member about all things virgin and in particular ?
You guessed it the UC cabin
He didn't have positive things to say understandably and you can appreciate that the narrow aisles do make things hard work for the cc and to be fair he wasn't moaning ,he was just answering my questions honestly.
Time for a nap so asked one CC member to make mine and jrs bed up and actually had a good couple of hours kip nearly missing the breakfast service but as soon as I woke up a crew member came and took my order of a bacon roll and a cup of tea.
I let jr sleep for as long as poss and woke him up when we were about half hr from landing.
Beds were then converted back for us and landed into a very quiet heathrow arrivals ,collected bags and went to revivals for a cup of tea ,was going to get breakfast but we were both still tired and just wanted to get home so we caught a cab back to the hotel and our father and son bonding weekend was officially over.
I have to say that my first UC experience was top notch from the ch staff in JFK and LHR although obviously we didn'tfly UC on the way out to the cc ,the service ,the food and for me the UCDS which has its knockers but sure beats sitting at the back!
Hope you all enjoyed the read
