I know exit row seats you pay for but the one next to door/window? When at the airport last year we got them at checking in and they only charged for 1 seat as the lady said its a bulk head seat or was I just lucky ?

The A & K exit row seats always used to be free as the casing that holds the emergency slide significantly intrudes into your legroom.
However since the new seat reservation system came in, where you can book exit rows online in advance, it's possible that they've started charging extra for them.

I can confirm you now pay for the emergency exit seat next to the door/window. I have paid for 50A ( emergency exit door/window seat ) for my up coming trip to DXB.

yep you pay for the exit seats - but they can actually move you if read the T&C's - and not necessarily to an equal or better seat.
Ive pre-booked the row behind with extra leg room.

Slightly off topic, on the A340-600, do people generally prefer 31K or 51K? I understand 31K doesn't have a door bulge where 51K does. Is this the case? Also does 31K have a window?
