Slight variation here - but what's the cost situation with downloading tracks in the US on a laptop bought in the UK? If you download in the UK, some bit of software (or something) detects you'rein the UK and charges you UK rates. But how does that work - is it detecting your UP address or the ISP you're using? If the latter, then presumably you can buy tracks at US cost, and if the former, then - ooer, a bit of a swizz.... Anyone here know the answer? Oh of course someone will do...[:X]

I have a US and a UK iTunes account. You're initially redirected based upon IP address but you can override this and choose a specific store. To buy at US rates you have to provide a US address/credit card.

Am I the only person here that does not own an IPod/ MP3 player ?
One of the main reasons for leaving the UK back in '89 was the music, Jason, Kylie..hell all that S.A.W. production crap. On a trip over I was forced to listen to Lily Allen, pure genius I was told...more crap.
Sorry guys but right now even the 80's seems better than right now...
Ok off to dig out my Iron Maiden collection and melt some ear wax [:0]

Class, Cheesy, Camp, no, not words to describe me (although if the cap fits...)but words you SHOULD have used that begin with the letter C to describe the utterly brilliant Stock, Aitkin, Waterman school of music.
Agree about the Lilly Allen crapness thing though

You would have been what, about 5 during that era? [:p]

Sheesh remembering spending hours mocking the wannabees Iron Maiden whilst listening to OMD.. next you'll be making a case for Cheap Trick Live at the Budokhan
Lilly Allens dad is a better singer than her, his bits on World in Motion absolute classic.
You all should not pigeonhole yourselves into one music genre, some of us have a very Catholic taste in music, ranging from Elgars Enigma variations, get rome Rythmn N Blues of BB king, Jools Holland, Go a bit Country with Shania Twain, The Eagles, maybe spanish/Latino with Enrique Englesias, Carlos Santana, Shakira through many classic Neil Diamond, Neil Sedaka, the Carpenters, Billy Joel tracks, head down to the Hacienda for New Order, K-Klass, Alison limerick, all the way to Ministry Of Sound with the incomparable Freemasons and Faithless onto the future dance classics of today and then into the rock and heavy bands, Meatloaf, Jon Bon Jovi, Led Zeppelin, Saga, Saxon et al.
Don't judge a whole section of music on one piece.
Music for the way you feel at the time.

AlanA - sounds like you are describing my music collection (although you missed out Jarre!)
Thanks,

I did!
I have his concert that he did on the buildings in Dallas on video and a couple of his early albums
I have a total of 838 albums of various music forms, in vinyl, cassette, CD, CDA DVD-A and laserdisc ([B)])
I must get them all converted onto MP3 and onto a hard drive someday as a backup.
New live lounge album is due out on 22 October. However it doesn't have the Editors track you refer to (or The Streets - Your Song) which is on the Radio 1 - Established 1967 CD (came out Monday) which I believe is a similar concept but a proper studio recorded album rather than "live" covers.
They sure are bringing out another album. The legend that is Jo Whiley was talking about it the other day on air. I believe one of the tracks will be the excellent cover by Editors (note not The Editors) of the Calvin Harris track Acceptable in the 80's.

Some of the cover done in the live lounge this year have been legendary, hope they bring another album out.

OK, so I've ordered the Radio 1 covers album, the latest offerings from Amy Winehouse, KT Tunstall, The Fratellis and, on Alan's recommendation, the new one from Harry Connick Jr. I know, I'm still a long way from being 'down with the kids' but I feel I may just be regaining some semblance of 'hip'.
Oh, and Decker, I've tried listening to Ludacris, and he is a very sweary, angry young man.
Now, where did I put that Ray Charles CD...

Yes, dear old Eminem, definitely some anger management issues there.
Maybe I'm underestimating Mr. Ludacris, but all that effing and blinding suggests a not entirely happy young man. Christ, I sound like my dad. I think perhaps I'm not the modern 'hip-hop' or 'urban' type. Although Charlie Parker was quite the lad in his time, you know.

Frequently depends where the effing and blinding is coming from. George Formby is very risquŽ but was a product of the era. Songs about the day to day life of hookers amused our parents ("Never on a Sunday"). And as you so rightly point out with Mr Parker -

mixed moments of pure genius with unreliability, and when he died at just 34, the doctor signing his death certificate assumed he was almost twice that age, from his fast-lane lifestyle..

Good link. And I'm glad I now know that there's a rapper out there called Sir Mix-a-lot. Genius.
Yes, The Bird did kind of disprove at least one part of the adage, 'live fast, die young, look better in your coffin'. Though his habits did stretch to a little more than Stella and whisky chasers on a Friday night.
And as George Formby might have said: 'Turned out f**king nice again!'.

Sir Mix-a-lot - too funny, prefer Public Enemy personally but chaque a son gout. To each generation their own. It is the job of the older generation to disapprove of the younger generation that they may more effectively strike their own identify and take their place in society. I suspect the current fixation with staying down with the youth erodes the natural generational barriers and prevents the younger generation from making their own reality and thence working out their place in the natural order of things.
These things tend to homeostasis - as George Melly postulated in his seminal "Revolt Into Style" the older generation neuter the younger by adopting their fashions as their own thus forcing each successive generation to define their own style. I worry that we are crippling this process by the increased infantilisation of culture.
Was interested to hear in a Ned Sherrin tribute that "I wonder who's kissing her now" was banned in the war for the effect it had no overseas personnel.

Never mind Kylie..... What about all those other superstars who would never have had the opportunity to showcase their musical talent without the wonderful S.A.W
WWF Superstars, Roland Rat, Pat & Mick, Dolly Dots, Sam Fox
WOW the list is endless (sadly)[:$]

Glad to see that you have all ordered the new Radio One live lounge album- although am surprised you aren't all downloading
buying is so last year after all!
As for everyones hate of Lilly Allen I am surprised. I was never a fan of the rehab girl (aka Amy Whinehouse) but to be honest both her and Lily are growing on me- manly thanks to the genius of Mark Ronson. "Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly." are also very good and a bit less mainstream.
As for my lack of pre 2000 material- I do have a fair few tracks and there are many artists from those days I love but alas do not have the CD's to burn them onto Itunes and cant be bothered to trawl Itunes to find them.
My recomendations of songs for this week for you all to have a little listen to are:
Homecoming- Kanye West and Chris Martin (Yes of Coldplay fame!)
Valerie- Mark Ronson
With Every HEartbeat- Robyn
Gimmie A light- Whitestarr
Fed Up- Remi Nicole
Sleeping With Giants- Academy Is (Often heard in the store without any lights- Holister!)
Also for a few little checky laughs
Fish- Mr Scruff (You will ALL recognise this song!)

So really, I shouldn't be trying to be 'down with the kids' at all? In fact, by trying to do so, I'm actually messing the afore mentioned 'kids' up?
Well that's a relief, from now on I'm going to embrace the sparsity of 00s songs on my iPod and revel in my 70s and 80s oriented music collection. Now, if you'll excuse me, I must go; I'm off to listen to Radio 2!

Until iTunes offer downloads in lossless format I shall remain 'so last year'.
