So a chance to retain VS gold for another year showed it's head today. I was offered the chance to spend another 3 months in India including a fly back (VS upper class of course). This would give me gold for another year and I won't lie - this did factor in my decision to accept the role! It it just me who will go to such extreme lengths?!!
Nah! I'm taking a side trip to SIN on SQ while en route from HKG to SYD to retain gold [}:)]
In answer to the original question - not so far as to impact my life.
(I'll use the same statement I made on FT not too long ago...):
Fly where you want, when you want to. If that's enough to get yourself some extra benefits, then great - if not, busting a gut and putting yourself through "Tier Point Runs" is just madness to me. There are better things to be spending your life doing

Fair comment Paul, but have you been in a situation where you might lose your gold status?
Unfotunately in my line of work, business trips don't happen but I enjoy hunting around to earn extra FC miles. If I were in Ongen's shoes I would think very seriously about taking the post to retain gold.
I don't know if I would spend 3 months in India to retain gold but as I'm the type who flies just enough a year to retain if one year I wasn't going to I would deffo do a flight to make sure.
As I'm now in the SFO CH with a three hour wait on a PE flight I'm quite glad I'm gold and think one flight a year is good enough to keep it.
Ooh fab... just got into upper on miles..

Virgin is one of the few airlines to lower the bar in retaining status versus the TPs needed to earn the staus.
This in itself offers an incentive to keep gold. (as its easier than earning it again)
I think other factors that come into play are how much the extra benefits mean to you and how hard you have to spend to earn them.
Its easy for people who travel for work to not understand why people do TP/mile runs but they arent in a position of needing to do it
Personally I've done probably the most flying in a four day period possible to retain my status last year.
Fri night fly out to SIN back Mon night to LHR (with six other flights over the weekend)
I enjoy flying and wanted to see if it could be done - others think i crazy and thats fair enough.
That (so far) is my only TP run and answers the OP's question

Very true. There were other aspects to me accepting the role (professional development etc.). Still, the thought of Au for another year made me smile when I realised [^]

Have to disagree, I really enjoy TP runs. Our next HNL trip is 16806 miles in about 100 hours, I can think of few things in life I enjoy more than flying First class. As I have never been forced to travel by work commitments I have flown many thousands of miles in the last 20 years for pure pleasure. I was lucky that I married someone who also enjoys the same buzz of travel; itÕs my only addiction (apart from cider and cars:D).
