The whole point of the clear plastic bags (being handed out to pax) is that you are not allowed ANYTHING in your pockets when boarding.... so no one will be sold Duty Free items (although the shops may remain open for delivery on return service).

As and when flights depart there will be screening at the gate.

Ben - I was not refering specifically today, it was more a general point, coming back from Italy in April I had 2 glass bottles in my hand luggage, what was to stop me smashing those and using them as a weapon? but I am not allowed to take nail scissor with me!

Gillettes etc ARE allowed so they didn't miss them per se.

But is anyone like me just a little bit suspicious about this, could it possibly be a politically motivated event. Prime minister abroad etc but we are still looking after you and on the ball.

Its difficult to know these days, we used to get these things from the Government during the 1st and 2nd World War to polarise public opinion.

Fraid I've had exactly the same thoughts egg. There's no way we can know, or ever will, but I can't help but be cynical.

Have just awoke here in the US and watching the huge traffic jam at LHR on MSNBC.

I respect everyone's opinion and don't discount the possibility of political motivation on the part of those who are disclosing the plot. But I seriously doubt that the level of the alarm being raised would be done purely for political gain. In other words, even if politics is involved there remains the matter of the plot itself. Imagine our anger had the plot succeeded and we later learned that the government knew but didn't inform us of the danger.

"According to The Associated Press, the terrorists had targeted United, American and Continental airlines"

Wonder if that includes Code Shares?

Probably not. They would likely to have continuted what they have done in the past and target the US and its associated airlines.

Not suprised that no UK based operators have been mentioned - SRB's and WW's offices have probably been keen to avoid any inclusion in todays press reports.

I remember being in the us and a new machine was being launched at security wither MCO or TPA that could screen bottles of liquid and assess whether what was supposed to be in them was what it was meant to be. what happened to that piece of technology?

I do find it odd that the VS / VA website has had a notice about changes to Hand luggage rules for ages and when clicked it was a blank page.

This latest no Hand Luggage issue also includes Crew so I am told anyway.

Safe flight to all!

Interesting addition of VA site
From VA Site

THROUGH TICKETS

We have been advised that some Domestic and short haul flights to and from UK airports have been cancelled. Any passengers connecting to/from Virgin Atlantic flights to any of these services and travelling on "through tickets" can re-book or cancel their flights and receive a refund. Please contact the point of sale. Passengers who have made separate bookings will not be entitled to a refund of their Virgin Atlantic flight should their connecting flight with another carrier be cancelled.

Only if your dumb enough to tell them you £30 flight has been cancelled!! Sack your £30 flight off and tell VA that you want you original flight rebooked. If they ask about you original flight, you are now planning to travel direct from LHR/LGW/MAN!

I take it then - when you through security all the shops are closed
As there is little point in duty free if you cannot take on board and are "not allowed consume" untill you arrive at your destination.
I mean its crazy - You put everything throuigh security and can then go to Dixons and buy a camera - how does it work?

Wow, this is quite something. I really don't care if airlines weren't prepared properly, securitry is poor, the issue hasn't been handled preperly etc (as some are saying). I'm just thankful they managed to stop it.

Wow. I just woke up in Montreal to find this out!

Work's a bit of a panic back home too, flights cancelled everywhere. Still, as others have said, at least they stopped it before it could happen.

As V-Ben posted earlier - The shops are open only for collection of goods upon your return to the UK or for goods delivered direct to your home address. Other that these two options I'm afraid it's window shopping only at present. :)
