Yes you can. NOt sure about cancelling one segment though..why would you get 75% back though?

Generally, if you cancel a reward booking, you get 75% miles back (and I think you are charged a small fee too.. $50 ISTR)

You can simply book a one way flight for half the miles. Either on the website by clicking at the top of the page oneway or ringing up the FC helpline. You can't book one way partner rewards, it's only on virgin metal.

Maybe a better option would be to change the dates for a GBP25 or $50 fee. This way you would avoid the penalty.

So following this logic it is possible to travel economy in one direction and premium economy on the return using a mixture of air miles and companion tickets?

Companion tickets can only be used with full fares in the respective classes.
