Quick question please - I tried the search facility but could find nothing - Will BMI transfer luggage for onward flight to Shanghai with Virgin from Dublin. I know some airlines will transfer but some wont - depending on relationship. I called BMI in Dublin but left waiting on one of those automated lines - They drive me mad.

Honey Lamb is your guru on this one.

BTW, there is a great thread on another subject that you may like. Hope you don't mind me suggesting, but I found it so useful.

I just wondered is it safer to collect your bags and recheck them yourself? I am going to LAS in October via SFO on VS then American West. Is there a likely hood of them going missing?

Keith, bmi announced some time ago that they will ONLY interline bags that are for a trip purchased as the same itinerary. I believe VS announced the same (quietly) a few months back.

If your flight from Dublin-LHR-Shanghai is booked and ticketed on exactly the same itinerary, they will. If it is on separate tickets, they will not.

Cool - it makes it easier for others to read.

Ok Preiffer - I will have loads of time so I dont think Ill take a chance and let the bags go through - better to collect and re-check - If I do this do I take my case through customs - transfer to t3 and check in again or do I go to flight transfer and check in again inside t3. I have never had to pick up my baggage before in Heathrow as the last time I went to Shanghai was with SIA and they checked the luggage all the way through for me.

If you're picking up your baggage, you have to leave the airside area (with your bag) and then go to T3 to re-check in. Pretty sure flight Connections will be unable to help you.

I bet there is a high chance your bags will be MIA (missing in action) if you try to check them to American West. [:(]

Assuming you fly from London you will have to pick up claim your bags and at the minimum put it on the transfer bag area (also assuming that it was taged thru).

Well since sailor has appointed me as guru I suppose I'd better give my 2c worth. [|:)]

As others have said, unless the BMI and VS flights are on the same ticket with the same PNR you will not be able to check your bags through. While it does seem like an inconvenience I actually prefer collecting them and re-checking them and really don't find it any slower that way. By the time you have taken the long walk to the Flight Connection Centre, waited for a bus and driven through the bowels of LHR to T3, climbed the stairs to the transfer desks, you can just as easily have walked to T3 via the subway.

From my experience by the time you have walked from the area in T1 where the Irish flights come in the bags are beginning to come out on to the carousel and there is usually very little delay. When you exit the secure area turn right and follow the signs for the Underground and T3. You can take a lift down and once there it is all one level till you get to T3 Departures and there are plenty of walkways to assist you. The huge advantage is that you arrive at the VS check-in area and another advantage is you get the whole UC experience. In the FCC there is no dedicated UC desk.

Incidentally, you cannot use the FCC with unchecked bags. I still have the bruises from when I fell over the cases of an Indian family who seemed to have all of their wordly goods in their suitcases and were trying to gain access to the FCC [:0]

Hope this helps

I just had an email from my travel agent advising that my tickets are in fact "through" tickets and can have the bags checked all the way to Shanghai but I think I will take Honey Lambs advise and collect the bags and ship myself over to T3 and re-check the bags in as the last thing I need is for the bags to go missing and be in Shanghai with no clothes but the ones I am standing in.
As Honey said the UC experience begins when you check in so thats sounds the best way.
