Looking at a short notice personal trip to Sydney next week - it occurred to me I don't know which airline has the most spacious economy seats. Can anyone tell me who has the best economy seats in Y down to Australia?

Many thanks.

Malaysia Airlines with 34 inches and Emirates with 33 inches according to Airline Quality. Seams odd as I hear Emirates packs them in Economy.

VS would be OK if you're willing to pay the extra for an exit row. Other than that I couldn't cope with 31" or so for that distance

Malyasian does have 34" on their 747's and 777's. On the Airbus its 33". I have flown to Aus with them in 2005 and they are really good. You can also pre book the first row in economy beforehand - if I can remeber correctly it was row 26 - just check with the airline - I dont think they class it as a exit seat anyway.

Hope this helps.

The issue with Emirates in Y is that on say a triple 7 they squeeze 10 across rather than 9 (as do BA, AA, etc.), so they may have 33" but not a lot of shoulder room.

The new VS Y is a great improvement with much more legroom than before. If you get the new seats is even better. I didn't have any issues on the 12hrs to HKG.

I guess to be accurate, the thing that bugs me is the seat-back in front being inches from my face when the person in front slams it back.

So I guess it's the seat PITCH not so much the leg room that I'm bothered about, although for all intents and purposes they amount to much the same.

But with short legs as I have (inside leg 29" at a stretch) the acutal leg room is less of an issue for me than the proximity of the seatback of the seat in front.

MH or TG... both have 34inches, but MH have PTVs.
Both are very good airlines.

MH get my vote - I'm 6"4 and found their seat pitch to be as comfortable as it comes for Y....:D

In that case don't go with Emirates, flown with them to/from MEL on 777 and A345. Never had some much problem eating my inflight meals. The FA does encourage you to have your seatback upright during meal times.

Also IIRC Emirates flys the B777 and A345 to SYD. I would take the A345 as it has ICE which looks cool. Maybe stop ever in DXB too.

Look forward to your TR!

Most EK B777's also have ICE.

Also, have a look at the CX website, their new Y seatgets rid of the seat in your face scenario!

I've commented on this before - ICE is very good, but the programming available on it is poor, IMO. That is, there are no challenging, serious (adult but not in the p**n sense) films and tv programmes.

It's great for music however, but then I take my iPod and it's got more than ICE has ...

For me, ICE had a rather out-dated selection of programmes.

IMHO United in any class does not compare with any of the European or Asian carriers. The 38" seat pitch doesn't make up for the lack of everything else - and it isn't guaranteed either.

And when things go wrong? They needed to use 3 747's to try and get me out of SFO to SYD last month, 30 hours of delay, no hotels booked for any passengers, no apology, no compensation and an awful lot more I could moan about. So after a 4 hour jaunt over the Pacific, then being dumped in the SFO domestic terminal at 2am with a 1st class amenity kit and being told to get on with it for the next 21 hours, I will never be flying with these clowns again.
