Companion Flights - More Questions

A quick question you may be able to provide an answer for - the Companion Reward flights that VS give on their Credit Cards and for retaining Au status - do I (as the voucher holder) have to be a member of the party flying? Or can I book 2 tickets in other peoples name and use the voucher?? I am feeling a bit generous so may give one of these away to some family! [^]g

No you do not have to be travelling, you can book flights for friends of family and utilise the voucher for them. Just tell Flying Club that's what you want to do when you call up.

just remember that the 'paid' ticket must be in a qualifying class, and the 'reward' companion seat is subject to availability.

Sarah, is this also true for PE Reward Upgrades? In other words, could Steve & I (we each have vouchers)use miles to purchase 2x EC seats + 2 x voucher = 2 x PE seats - for my brother & his fiance?

I am a bit confused. I have reatined Gold 3 or 4 times now (can't really remember) You talk about vouchers being issued for companion flights. I have never had any vouchers either by post or email. I am curious becaise my wife and 3 friends plan to go to New York shopping soon and would it be possible for me to buy two, get two free if you know what I mean??

If you have requalified your Flying Club Gold, you should have recieved a companion voucher. If you log into your Flying Club account you should see an entry such as " For renewing your gold card we've awarded you a companion ticket". If you have not had this, you need to call Flying Club. As a side, please note that you have to book with this voucher within 12 months of the date of issue otherwise it expires (note 'book' not 'travel').

Voucher, I guess, is the wrong word. you do not get a piece of paper or a separate email, per se.... just an entry on your statement with the information. You can use the companion fares, but you must purchase the qualifying level of fare for the 'buy one' portion, and there must be reward seat availabliity for the 'one free'. best value is arguably the Premium economy fares.....

To save starting a new thread about a similar subject...... I'm travelling out to SFO on PE 'W' class ticket and Mrs S is with me on a companion (Gold Renewal) ticket...... Assuming availability if I wanted to upgrade mine using miles.... whats the likelihood of being able to upgrade the companion ticket ?? either by miles, cash or a smile and sweet talking on the day....anyone ever achieved this ??

Consensus is zero %. But there's always a first time.In order of likelihood - cash, miles, smile with the latter two seeming stunningly unlikely.

Free companion is always only 'companion' to the fare paid or lower..... if that fare choses to use miles to upgrade, them the companion stays where they were... You could always look to spend miles for a 'full reward' but as it would be construed as a cancellation inside the 7 days travel, you would lose the 'companion' ticket. Sorry.

Food for thought ..... think I will upgrade mine now and spend the miles on an UC reward for Mrs S ..... thereby keeping the companion ticket for another time ......... (another excuse to book a future trip [y] )

As Juliet said above, the most bang for the buck seems to be a PE booking, but it comes down to personal preference and spending limits.

There are probably dozens of posts on this subject in the Flying Club and Guru forums.

Personally, i think the best way of using it is with Premium Economy flights. At many times during the year there isnt a lot of difference between a K class and an S class fare to the East Coast.

I think there are too many variables here. Not wanting to fence sit, but it is extremely difficult to answer any question about what is the best way of booking seats on aeroplanes.

What is very good one week may be different the next. I have found with booking any ticket, you have to shop around. The same applies to the companion voucher - one time you can check and get a good deal in Y or PE on a particular route, the next time you check it is cheaper to buy two tickets than use the voucher.

Sod's Law often applies as well. The best deals are always for the routes you don't want or at the times you don't want to travel.

The best thing to do is choose where and when you want to fly, give the Flying Club a ring to get prices, with and without the voucher, then ring or surf around to see if you can get better elsewhere.
