So I am planning to go to South Africa over Christmas. Virgin has a fare at ~8000 USD in Z SFO-LHR-JNB

The alternative is to take a Great Escapade trip for around 7000 USD

SFO-(NZ)-AKL-(NZ)-SYD-(VS)-HKG-(SQ)-SIN-(SQ)-JNB-(VS)-LHR-(VS)-SFO

One nets 20 TP and 54000 miles

The other one earns me 55000 miles and 26 TP

One saves me time, the other one allows me to visist friends in Aukland, Sydney, Singapore on the way there and saves me a 1000 USD or so.

Any opinions?

Knowing you Artur, and your love for crazy long haul flying, take the GE! :D

Thanks,

We looked at this a while back, the GE is the only way to do it.

Having done a similar GE a few weeks ago I give it a total thumbs up--an experience not to be missed, great value for money and all flights ones to look forward to rather than dread.

NZ lounge at LAX is however much nicer than what you get at SFO, and stopping off in S Pacific (Fiji etc) a wonderful addition. Actually, i wonder why you are even hesitating!

GE - the $1000 save can go towards hotels, drink, food etc. And you'll get plenty of miles!
