Has anyone heard this? I was just reading something and it said that as part of the W & Y refit on the LGW fleet they are also installing the above.

I've searched but found nothing so apologies if this has been discussed already.

Hi Nick, I was reading this on wikipedia. under the flying with virgin header there is a bit about the new LHR config and then it goes on about the LGW fleet.

Not heard that at all, seems strange the VS would do this, surely if they were going to upgrade the IFE they would install V-Port. And Wikipedia isn't always the most reliable of sources!

Maybe they are planning to install this in the new 787's. after all V port will be old in another 4 years time(in electronic terms that is)

If the time ever comes for an IFE update for the LGW/MAN fleet, it would make good sense to fit either an updated version of V-Port or a new system.

V-Port is a good 3 years old now and even though I not an electronics guru, I'm fairy sure that something better must exist. SQ's hardware that they use for the lastest version of Kris World on the 77W's is a possibility I'm guessing?? :D

Surely it would just be an updated version of V-Port, maybe new software or something so that the existing V-Port a/c could be upgraded without having to install a whole new piece of equipment, would seem strange to install a whole new system.

The system which V:Port runs on is the Panasonic system 3000 or K series system. Link here

The other system Panasonic provide is the X series (which is the EX2 system) which I think is an updated version of the K system offering extras such as touch screen and more storage but using lighter quicker servers. Link here

Both these systems are now used by many airlines.

Sounds like the Panasonic system would be something simular to that being used by FCA and DL at the moment- and I think VX have got it installed as well.

I think EK are getting ex2 on some of the new B777, it has the same front end as existing system (3000E) but a lot more features. An 80gb drive in each seat group will allow more functionality in case of system failures.

The newer EK aircraft (& now all B777's) have the 3000E system like VS & it performs equally well (normally), not so the old 2000 on the A330's.

I wonder how long it will actually take to get the systems upgraded - I am sure VS are looking to have VOD on all their aircraft ASAP.

If they were then ALL of the VS fleet would have V:PORT by now...including the LGW/MAN fleet [:#]

The older 747's AFAIK are actually the LHR 747's and these are, people are surmising, going to end up at Gatwick when the younger ex Alitalia rejected 747's leases end.

I always regard the LGW 744s as the oldest a/c along with the A343s judging by interior - I don't mind that much about the age of the actual a/c it's the inside that counts for me.
