Bit of a dry one this; have searched VS 'Terms & Conditions' till my eyeballs bled, but can't find the answer to my quandry.

Child fares are (I believe) 75% of adult fares, and I'm pretty sure this also applies when spending miles. Does it, however, apply to miles spent upgrading? Eg. If I buy a Y child fare at 75% of adult price, how many miles are needed to upgrade it to a G?

I hope you are right, but I always thought that VS 'charged' the full adult mileage for children's reward seats unlike BA & BD who I know offer a reduced rate for children.

From experience I know that infant reward seats are charged at 10% of adult miles, the same as when paying for a ticket. Was rather hoping the same rule would be applied to children...

reward seats, regardless of the age of the passenger seated, will always be 100% of the miles as the reward is for the 'seat'. Taxes will always remain the same as well.

and as per the T&C's from the VS website:
4.3.8 Qualifying fare levels for Economy to Premium Economy upgrades and Economy Companion tickets on Virgin Atlantic flights.

Only full adult fares apply:

so - the child would need to upgrade to the adult fare in order to be upgraded.

This is one of those weird anomalies that has always intrigued me. I think it's pretty harsh that VS do not offer reduced miles fares / upgrades for kids - especially since if you buy a full adult fare you cannot even get miles for kids if they are under 12 and you are not Au.

Unfortunately that is the way it is and I guess few FF are aware or even particularly care. We tend to always pay cash for the kids as I am unwilling to devalue our miles by paying a full rate.

Trying hard to mask my disappointment - and failing. What a rip-off. We'd have to upgrade to an adult fare, then use full miles to upgrade the fare class and after all that poor little mdvipond jr. still wouldn't be able to earn miles? Shame on you VS...
