Hi Phil

Even if UCS is not fitted by April 2005 (which I think it should be) I would say that the upgrade to UC is still worth it as the extra leg room, bigger seat (all be it not J2000 or UCS) and most importantly the whole Upper Class service still sells it for me.

In my opinion (though it is personal) Recaro seats are not as comfortable as J2000 seats (at least, not for night flights...). The recline is ok, but not as good as many others (BA NCW, VS J2000, CO BusinessFirst... am spoilt by flat seats these days!), but the seats are wide. The leg rest on the Recaro seats annoys me - the lower bit is an extending metal bar (so not brilliantly supportive of your feet/ankles - especially if you are tall, I should imagine).

Depends how precious your miles/points are to you, I guess.

I agree that it is a personal choice.

For me the seats would be a minor consideration. You are burning the points on the whole UC experience of Clubhouse / UC service etc.

If you think that it is worth shelling out the points, then go for it, the anticipation being part of the fun.

Although Phil is talking about only upgradiing the return leg (from what I can see from his post).

So depending on where he is returning from, there maybe so clubhouse to experience (and some of the other lounges are "so so"). Also service tends to be less important (and a bit more "hastey") on the night-time/return flights - if you are intesretd in sleeping.

Saying that recaro seats are still a lot better than PE seats...

Saying all of that, I am sure I would upgrade (but both legs!)

Can i just add that i've never tried the J2000, but i've had a great night's sleep on the Recaro. Having experienced the same night flight in both PE and UC (on the LAS route) i can say for sure i slept much longer in UC. You do get the service benefits still, because these benefits are mostly related to the meal, and you still get the meal on a night flight :).

The recline is pretty good, not flat, but far back. That metal bar at the bottom of the foot rest is pretty useless, i must agree. But i'm quite short(5'7"), so the leg rest by itself is pretty good for me.

i will be flying out to JFK UG to UCS but ret from LAS. I slept fine on the ret leg this year from las but could have done with more.

I have been in j2000 but i wasnt sure about the recaro's. The main reason for the ug on the ret leg is so i can get as much sleep as poss.

The Recaros are much better than PE but, as others have said, they are not nearly as good as J2000 or even the old BA cradle seat. I did manage to sleep last time I flew out from LGW, but that may have been more to do with the quantity of booze than the seats. Coming back I had precisely zero sleep and could not get comfortable, which for me is pretty par for the course on LGW UC planes. However, the rest of the service is more important to me.

As BlackCat says, you might want to try drinking a fair amount of booze! :). That just might be why i tend to sleep in UC, PE, even dare i say, Econ. :). And a quick thirsty look at the cabin crew has elicited a double serving before now. :D

Hi,
by next april most if not all of the LGW fleet should be the new UCS

I wouldn't worry to much about the recaro seats as you shouldn't see them!

I travel a lot from LGW and find those seats comfortable anyway!
Then again im only 5'4!
of course if you flew before the refit there would be no bar or IFM
