First 787 Dreamliner is assembled

The body of the aircraft looks a lot smaller than I thought it would. Engines are huge though, gets my thumbs up for an attractive bit of kit overall. Next stop is the paint shop for a lick of Boeing blue..

4-5 years is along time to wait for VS to get their hands on one though..[:#]

Boeing's official launch is on 8th July at 23.30 GMT...

Hmm - the angle of view is playing a HUGE trick on the eyes there. While it looks "short" from that photograph, I have a feeling you'll be surprised if you get hold of any sideways images.

I wouldn't say it looks that remarkable, although the angle of the wings are cool (and its not painted yet). I'm sure the real benifits of this plane will be seen when its fitted out inside - that I am looking forward to!

From the press images and mock-ups I'd seen I was expecting the windows to look much larger. In those shots they look little different to existing aircraft?

There are several versions of the 787 ranging in length of body from 185-210 ft. This maybe a shorter one anyway.

Compared in length to 777 (210ft) and 747 (231f) which are huge aircraft themselves I am sure this is 'Big Enough'

I think she looks fantastic and cannot wait until the 787 gets to the skies.

The engines are HUGE and the racked wingtips just look great.

The pictures are a 787-8 which is the supposed to replace the 767-200 and 767-300er. Length wise it is about the same a 767-200 (the same a/c as used by Maxjet and Thomsonfly have a small number). This is the model type which has been ordered by Monarch and First Choice. It will have the smallest seat capacity SO do not fear the VS 787's will look much bigger!!!

When will the -9 and -10(is that finalised?) go into production?

10 has not been confirmed by Boeing at the moment and given the lack of 9 sales (currently) it will be interesting to see if it does go ahead. Although analysts are beginning to say that the 9 could outstrip 8 sales once the older 777/764 models (which it is replacing) get older. And of course 9 sales are on the low side due to carriers waiting to see what Airbus has to offer.

As for a 9 delivery date the first carrier to receive them will be Air New Zealand who are stating a 2011 delivery date. Other large 9 customers are Singapore, Continental, Qantas, VS and Air Pacific. Of course the delivery date could well change.

I don't want to sound cynical but it just looks like a 777 to me! Let's hope it proves me wrong!

I don't know about anyone else, but from all the spin and marketing I was expecting something a lot more spectactular and different to the norm[:?]

Although under the skin (and including the skin!) I'm sure this is a revolutionary aircraft....it's doesn't look all that different to what we fly on today? A few extra curves but still the same airliner format we've seen for decades [?]

If VS are still using the UCS when they receive the 787 wil it operate as 1-1-1 or 1-2-1? Anyone hazard a guess? [?]

I think it'll be 1-1-1, but by the time the 787s are delivered UCS will already be around seven years old so I wouldn't be surprised if we saw something different, or at least a few tweaks on the original design.

Well the thing is Boeing tried originally to make the lines of the 787 more severe and unique but found that it would not work as they had hoped and had to revert to a more similar design structure. The change was down to aerodynamics and economics.
