I'm trying to book an economy reward flight to EWR (25,000 miles) but the only flight available is to JFK. Looking at the booking class availability on SeatCounter it shows 7s across the board. Is reward availability tied into these fare codes or how else is availability determined?
Cheers.

You need a Y, B or L fare in order to use miles to upgrade, L being the cheapest. You can test out if there is reward availability by running a dummy miles booking on-line.

Cheers
James

EDIT: Sorry just realised you are after purchasing an Economy tiket outright with miles! You can still run a dummy booking to check availability on a given date [:)]

Thanks James. I'm not looking to upgrade though - just get a ticket in economy and pay only(!) the taxes etc. Is it the same fare codes for this?
Cheers.

It really isn't worth it, the flight element is only about 20 or so at the moment!

Agree with Decker - not best use of points right now, even in the 25K sale IMHO.

Taxes and fees on a Y mileage booking are currently 180.

Which is also worth remembering if you are ever looking for a Y to W upgrade, many times the price of a discount W ticket is less or equal to the of a Y, B or L

I see your point - thank you for all your replies. However, I've got to go in the middle of August though and the lowest Y fare is 527 on the dates I need to travel. I've only got 30k miles built up over three or so years so am never going to be travelling in anything other than economy and thought that this was as good a use for them as anything.

So, am I out of luck getting a reward even though there's 7s available throughout? I'm starting to think that I'm barking up the wrong tree in trying to match reward availability to a particular fare class!

Cheers.

What dates are you looking to travel - I just did a couple of LHR - NYC dummy bookings in August using the 25,000 points link and got decent availability.

Hi Nick,

I'm looking to travel out on Friday 7 August but really need to fly to EWR and the only flight option given is to JFK.

Coming back is not an issue.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

Have just looked at the availibilty for those dates. If EWR is the only option then the only economy reward seats available are out on the 5th August on the VS017 @ 2025/2305 hrs

If you need to travel on the 7th August then JFK is the only option i'm afraid.

The only other reward seats on the 7th August to EWR are in PE on the VS001.Unless you know someoen who has a PE upgrade voucher they would let you use, it looks like JFK is the only option.

Thank you so much for looking for me, it seems like I'll be trekking across from JFK to EWR unless I can worm my way into the bosses good books [:?]
