Ther's an article in this months copy of Busniess Traveller regarding the designing of the UCS. There's a very interesting bit right at the end of the article the reads:

Quote:
For the business traveller, it's all good news, not least because there's a promise that the developments will gradually trickle down through premium economy to economy.

Er, yes. Um, probably pushing copyright a bit too far to include a scan from a commercial mag. Sorry, I'll need to edit it.

What are the rules about copying info into any forum? I am assuming that we can copy info if it is already on the web (eg extracts from the VS website) but not if it is from something that you would need to buy eg a magazine or a book? Who would be liable for any infrigement of copyright?

cheers

Copyright exists for the web in exactly the same fashion as for books and magazines. See Virgin Atlantic's website terms and conditions for the use of copyrighted text and images. In short, for non-personal use you need a licence from the copyright owner.

Under the terms of most copyright legislation, wholesale copying of copyrighted material is a serious breach and could lead to VirginFlyer being liable for an infringement. So I guess we'd prefer that people didn't do it!

The concept of "Reasonable Use" also comes into play - if you are quoting verbatim to credit/critique/explain etc...

The trouble is, "reasonable use" has never been adequately defined. If you are reviewing a book in a newspaper, then quoting short passages might be assumed to be reasonable use. However, I have difficulty stretching the term to include wholesale copying of material from a web site for the purposes of providing an alternative service (for example copying the terms and conditions from the VS site to another) without explicit licence from the copyright owner.

There is also the issue of the originator's copyright. Much material that ends up printed is offered under first serial rights by the author to the journal, and it may also be limited in geography and medium. This can obviously impact the copyright of the piece and this may differ (and become more of a burden) amongst different articles from the same publisher or author.

The safest approach is simply not to reproduce large quantities of text (i.e. anything larger than a sentence fragment) by copying and pasting from another site.

Seems fair enough! So the original posting was well within bounds, the subsequent overstepped the mark...
