Having downloaded the availability tool, I have been regularly checking it to check whether or not my flight was going to be full. (And check out the chances of being upgraded)

What I find confusing is how the numbers beside the flight codes increase, for example a month ago availability for my flight was
D4 W2 S2 K1 Y7 B3 L3 M3 Q3 X0 N0
its now reading
D4 W3 S3 K2 Y7 B7 L7 M7 Q7 X2 N0
Can I presume this is due to cancellations etc?
Thanks in advance.

Yes these numbers to show availability for each flight fare class so they will increase and decrease as bookings or cancellations are made. For J, D and Z fares (Upper Class) the number will only show a max of 4, for the all other fares class codes a max of 7 will be shown.

The other thing to look at on availability tool is the seat maps, they can be quite difficult to read at times but they do show the total number of available seat in that class.

i.e. for my VS3 flight it's still showing a lot of empty seats:

VS 0003 Z 24SEP LHRJFK TOTAL AVAIL SEATS:41

I think the numbers also increase closer to flight date due to more seats being released into a particular class of fare.

I have had a similar experience where a flight has looked almost sold out for weeks and then, a few days before take off, lots of spare seats have appeared[:(][:(]

I'm not sure if it depends on the availability tool used, but you can definitely see more than 4 in J, D and Z classes - up to 7, actually, like the other classes. Members of "The Clubhouse" sub-forum will attest to this ;). In fact, it's probably worth buying a V-Flyer membership kit to find out more :D;).

The numbers can move based on bookings, cancellations and also at the whim of Revenue Management. This appears to have happened to the economy buckets - more cheap fare class availability has been opened up. With PE, it looks like someone cancelled a K class seat, although it's impossible to work out exactly what the Revenue guys are up to!:)
