I'm not crew or anything, but from what I understand (correct me if I'm wrong) automatic is what the door is set to before departure, so that when the door is opened, the esacape slide automatically inflates. I think Manual, is where you either set the slide off yourelf, on arrival to the gate.

Again, I don't know if this is for sure, but that's what I think it is. Anyone feel free if i'm wrong.

im not crew either...but i know my doors [^]:D

the doors have a power assist system which is activated by automatic mode. power is supplyed to the door, so that it is forced into the open position, as it opens the slide is deployed.

manual mode simply disarms this assist system, and the slide is prevented from being deployed.

hope this helps

Cool - thanks for that guys. Another door related question for you. This is almost one of those questions you don't want to ask incase the answer scares you too much.

Whats to stop someone opening a door midflight? Am I right in thinking its something to do with the cabin pressure keeping the door sealed shut. The door opens inwards a little first and then swings out, so when high up in the sky the pressure is effectively sealing it shut so you can't budge it.

Yep, that's pretty much it! The door acts like a "plug" in the body of the aircraft.

Cool - thats one less thing to worry about. Thanks for answering.

Is it just more or does anyone else have that irrational fear of walking past a door and tripping up and somehow managing to defy all laws of physics and gravity and suddenly opening the door? Its like the feeling of never being entirely comfortable standing behind a horse.

Hello,

This is my first post here and its quite exciting to be a new member.

I have a basic question about galley procedures.

Some airlines that I have flown with have a strict regulation about at least 1 flight attendant being present at all the galleys and never to leave a galley unattended. I guess it is some sort of a safety issue for them. Does Virgin have similar operating procedures regarding where the flight attendants should be at during cruise after the meal service is completed?

Thank you very much.

I always thought this meant that the crew had to hold their crucifixes on take-off!!

I have a question.
How do you load the PTV system? Is all the movies and software on a disk or CD[?]?

Odessey, I'm not a member of flight crew, but with the Odessey system there are lots of cassettes (one for each channel) that are loaded into a control panel.

If you're sitting at the bar on an odessey equipped B744, look behind you and you'll see it!

I understand that V:Port is operated via discs loaded which are loaded into the hold.

Not crew here either but IIRC Odyssey runs on a Windows NT O/S and V:Port runs on a Linux O/S.

On the 2 A/C I've been on with V:Port (G-VATL and G-VWOW) - they did look to have very slightly different versions as on G-VATL the on-screen displays (ie 'accouncement in progress' messages you see etc) were the usual green text (as with Odyssey), where as G-VWOW had clearer text blocks (black text on a white background)

Woah, all those tapes, lol.
One more question on PTV systems, does the PTV tapes/disk get send to the flight on the day of departure or are they are all ready delivered from the previous flight.
