Hi Alex!

Can I ask why you want to know? After all it seems a rather odd question. There are many staffers on here that may well be willing to answer the question but I would imagine they would prefere for it to done in private via a PM rather than placed on a public board. Certain websites such as cabincrew.com may well be able to help you, where such info could be more freely available.

I believe that any discount staff receive has to be earnt, so you have to work for the airline for x amount of time before you can use the benefits.

I do have a good friend who works for BA as ground crew, I know her perks include standby travel (never flown in anything lower than club since she started working there) and she gets 40% off at Avis plus loads more including free HEX travel IIRC. I believe all staff at BA who have worked there for more than 5 years get one free trip a year which has to be used by April of each year.

There are lots of benefits at Virgin, one I don't mind saying is that Virgin Staff get 7 free flights a year.

By 'free', Galley Guy means that all taxes are still payable and the tickets are standby only.

I don't think they get discount on flights on Virgin Galatic if that's what you're after.....

Unless Alex is the devil himself, I can't help thinking that was rude!

It was forthright but calling it rude seems a stretch. To make it rude I think it'd have to be something like

I can't help thinking that that is none of your business insert ad hominem here

or similar.

Staff discounts and perks are part of a companies payment package, and not really suitable for discussion on an open public forum such as this. So unless Alex is a member of staff for Virgin Atlantic it isn't really anything to do with him, or any of us who aren't on the company payroll.

I have to agree with Fossyo here. If a bona-fida member of VS crew wants to PM him directly with details then that's their business. I'd be extremly annoyed it the details of my pay and benefits was made public on an open forum.

I don't think HL was being rude at all. I was thinking exactly the same when I first read it.

yeah i have to agree if you're thinking of becoming crew then thats cool, you can e mail the recruitment team but even then you wont find out untill you are offered a job with us. our benefits are some of the best in the industry i don't mind saying, but the exact details i would rather keep to myself. if you have a friend who works for us and your on their staff travel or want to be then i suggest you ask them. Don't want to sound rude, but the info is a bit personal.

Surprisingly sensitive people around. This is a VS forum, and it is of interest to some members.

Of course no one needs to say if they don't want to, but basic VS salary information is easy to find on the website.

I used to work in M&S, I got 20% discount. :)

I don't think it's being sensitive, just common sense. Nobody in their right mind will want to discuss their personal financial details, including bonuses. If Alex wants to know i.e. because he/she wants a job at VS, then he needs to speak to them directly or have a CC PM some info.

I think after the very long threads when the strike threatened that people would be more wary about discussing this sort of thing and really this is a consumer forum (although everything under the sun is discussed) and not a cabin crew forum.

I have to disagree there. Here is not a VS website, but a community website that happens to be about Virgin Atlantic, travel and other odd bits. While it may be of interest to some, to ask a relative stranger what their wages etc. are would be very rude and intrusive face-to-face even more so in a public forum.

Basic salary may be available on 'the website' but that doesn't make it any less private and some of the other benefits may be classed as company confidential.

Not sensitive, just keen that threads don't descend into indviduals wages etc. don't become common knowledge.

Just my view. Other will have their own.[:)]

@ HoneyLamb.

Cant help thinking you are ignorant and patronising.

OP asked a straight forward question.

It might have been a straight-forward question but it was posted in a public forum which I doubt is the appropriate place. From the strike threads (which is still fresh in a lot of peoples minds), it's so easily for a little of information to be interpreted wrongly or for tempers to overheat.

From my point of view, I wouldn't like to reveal how much I earned and what perks I got to someone who hasn't asked why he/she wants the information.

I agree with one part of this post, in that it was a straight forward question, quite possibly the OP was being just curious.(As i'm sure others on this site have pondered the same queston, but been to afraid to ask!![:w]

I think though, stating that Honeylamb is ignorant and patronising, is a bit harsh. Although, it was a rather blunt reply. Could have done with another sentence to follow on from such a bold opening statement, to make it a little more friendly respoce, rather than confrontational.

Wow -- LOTS of OTT stuff here. My god.

Maybe one way to have handled the question, if it caused offense, would be to have said: 'Thanks for your question. I'm sure one of the CC, if they so wish, will be happy to reply to your question in a private message. As you might guess, discussing the details of wages and bennies is often a private matter.' That said, I could probably detail the salary and benny packet of a CC to the penny based on what was aired publicly in the strike threads.

And Honey Lamb, while uniquely prickly in this instance, is neither ignorant nor patronising in my experience. She's a kitty-loving Irish lass.

And finally, I think 'rude' is in the eyes of the beholder. No use arguing the fine point of semantics -- if one is offended, one is offended. IMO, at the very least, the statement was, erm, categorically direct.

Amazingly enough, I find it is me, the humble Jackanapes, asking everyone to collect their toys and place them back in your prams.

Back to your corners, fighters. Good day.

You are of course entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to mine, which is that it was company confidential matters which were none of the OP's business. The majority of posts in this thread support that view.

As to your view that I am ignorant and patronising, well again you are entitled to that view. However if you were a fully paid-up member of this forum with access to other areas where I normally post, you would see that I am neither. [:X]

It is a well known fact that VS employees can have any item off the shelves of John Lewis, get free booze and smokes anywhere in the world, have discounts of 99.9% at Louis Vuitton and 1,723 other well known stores in the world.

Oh, hang on that's MPs isn't it [:p]
