I'm new so please forgive me if I'm posting an old query

Looking at booking the above flights for 24/8 - 9/9 return

VA site quotes LGW-LAS (PE) & LAX-LHR (UC) at approx 1320

Two questions:-

By hanging on, will I get a better deal that this?

I have approx 15500 airmiles but this does not benefit me - using airmiles on the same journey comes out at 1745 !!

How come??

Many thanks
Rick

Welcome to the site, Rick.

They are both old chestnuts, but briefly; There is no way of telling if prices will go up or down. There are many, many factors - loads, oil prices, the strength of the pound and factors outside VS control, like terrorist atrocities that can have a massive effect on air travel.

Prices could come down, they could go up.

Sorry to be vague, but its a fact of life.

If you think you have a good deal - I would go for it. Gatwick to Vegas is a VERY popular route so sale fares are quite rare.

I assume you tried to book Miles plus money - there are many threads on the forum saying what a poor deal that is on certain routes at certain times of the year; there are also lots that say that it is a good deal for the infrequent flier at other time on other routes.

It all depends on time of year and route - like so many things in the airline world, it isn't an exact science.

It isn't a great welcome to the site - you have asked two very valid questions, and got two apparently fudged replies. [:I]

The views of others may be different.

We are a helpful lot here - honest. [8D]

What Nick says,

Also, just from my experience on this route that is a pretty good price, I truthfully don't see it coming down any.

Agreed - I'd book it!

And you're right, at your current mileage level you'll not see any benefit using them. However, you could do LGW-LAS in UC and LAX-LHR in PE and after the first leg you'll have >20k miles so you could see if you could use them to upgrade to UC on the return on check-in. If seats are available, there's a good chance you can use them then.

Except the LAX - LHR is a night flight and I much prefer a bed on that leg, for a day flight PE is more than acceptable.

Seems a good deal to me. We paid about £600 each for the same journey in Economy last August.

Thanks for all your replies - yes, it does seem like a good deal

Tried reversing the class i.e. LGW-LAS (UC) & LAX-LGW (PE) and the price comes out at £ 1999.50, £ 679.00 more expensive!

I realise that the LGW-LAS route is popular but that's a hike!

What ARE the chances of using points to upgrade from PE to UC LAX-LHR?

It will all depend on how busy the loads are. One thing though, to upgrade with miles you will need an upgradeable PE fare (W or S) otherwise you might have to pay the difference to an upgradeable fare first before they allow the upgrade.

and 15,500 wouldn't be enough for the upgrade.

But, as mentioned earlier by Slinky, once he has completed his outbound flight in PE, he will then have more than 20k, which would be enough to upgrade.

As long as they post in time and as long as there are G's open in UC.

Thanks to everyone for you helpful advice

Decided to book the LGW-LAS (PE) - LAX-LHR (UC) option for the great rate I quoted in my earlier post [:D]

Next question [:I]

Virgin Car Hire - any good?

The website does not offer the facility to book interstate carhire!

Spoke to a rep who confirmed that there is no OWD fee Nevada/California

What do you think?

Sure they are, take a look on the flying club page on the main VS site...

Anyways, easy work around, go to your Avis preferred profile page, there should be a box where you can select your airline affiliation, then enter your FC number in the box below, then just book from the main Avis site.

Where in the heck are you staying in Idyllwild [?]

Anyways, if you are spending the night there, there is a great restaurant called the GastroGnome....though it is rarely on the menu I can highly recommend the fried sage leaves, sound disgusting but is amazingly good.
