Not posted on here for a long time, but having just tried to book UC on last remaining 747 flight to New York (VS45) in July, it sadly now looks like 346 is the only option to New York now (unless you get a 343). Very sad IMHO, always seemed more of an event on the Boeing.

Is this a permanent change does anybody know?

It could well be seasonal - moving the 747s to popular summer routes like MIA or LAX etc.?

The only New York flight on a 744 in the summer is the VS 45 but it alternates between a 744 and a 346 depending on which day of the week and which month. In July the VS 45 Schedule is :-

1st to 14th 744 every day

15th to 31st 744 Mon/Fri/Sat/Sun
346 Tue/Wed/Thu

So will depend what day of the week you go as to which a/c type you get.

The LHR 744s for the summer will operate SFO, JNB, MIA, JFK (45) which is interesting as there are 5 744s at LHR, but only four will be utilised each day. All the other LHR routes are showing as 343s or 346s including LAX, so not sure what the 5th 744 will be doing.

Maybe LAS as a few people on here seem to think it's going to be moved from LGW

Thanks for the replies.

I guess this makes sense, though there seem to be less 747s on the New York Route every year, so I for one will not be surprised if all are gone permanently next year.

Just realised that the JNB takes up two a/c a day as it sits on the ground all day in JNB, so that accounts for the fifth 744.

With so many frequencies to JFK/EWR it makes sense to use smaller a/c, but I reckon they will probably continue using 744s on the route at peak times, if they can fill it, they'll use it!
