Hello,

Having a miserable day at work and I was sent this link to a complaints letter to Virgin. Accordingly the person who wrote it got a personal phone call from SRB apologising (I have my doubts!).

It made me chuckle anyway

May take a while to load but its worth it.

I'm not even sure that they care now? Responses are never forthcoming from Customer Services, so to get one from SRB may be wishful thinking?

Regardless of whether he did get a call from SRB, are the pics of the food real?

As for the entertainment, I had the same problem on my last flight to Chicago. Affected the only channels that had anything on I wanted to watch. If I had been sitting down the back I would have complained, but I sat at the bar instead. Grey Goose. Mmmmm.

I have had letters in Sir Rs hand but only in response to compliments, I got one from Necker Island to say happy birthday to my boss for his 60th, framed it for him. It was very kind of Sir R to do that for me.

He also sent and signed one of his books for me for a charity auction.

He doesn't respond to complaints though lol.

It's now made The Telegraph. VS responded saying SRB did call him and also commented on the 'award winning food'.

I first read this letter from a different source with more pictures...
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/blog/editors_corner/article/11975/
...and it's interesting to see how quickly it's now gone right around the world.

Looks to me like a very well conceived and brilliantly written letter that's clearly had the desired effect. Virgin press office have confirmed it's authenticity and SRB's response. Isn't it odd how many people on here didn't want to believe the story or that SRB would see the importance of such a clever complaint and respond?

Virgin have tried to turn this complaint into a positive but the sad fact is millions have now read and laughed at how bad Virgin can be!

Now he's been offered position as Virgin's food tester!

Just so all the doubters above can eat their words... just see what some intelligence and clever writing can achieve. Nice one.

I received this explanation of the meal service

quote:
I use Virgin Atlantic a fair bit on the India/US routes, as also BA,
mainly because I travel to SFO and need to break journey in London too.

The meal shown is one of the 'Hindu vegetarian meals' served by VS on the
India-UK route, and is quite a hit with the vegetarian travellers ex-BOM.
You get many of them, and not just Indian Hindus, who ask for it.

It consists of:-

a) Dhokla served with a imli chutney, which is why he thought it was sweet.
Next to it is the biscuit crumble eggless custard. For some reason, they
serve the starter with the sweet, something about the way the Gujaratis want
their meal timelined.

b) A fried open veggie sandwich, quite popular for those who like their
Bombay street food cooked/fried in front of them, served in a butter sauce.
This is the savoury, again, brilliant and tasty. High fat, sure.

c) Lightly sauteed veggies served with kadhee and with mashed potatoes.
That's not mustard, though the kadhee is kind of tangy and the assortment of
breads served with this dish is usually wonderful. One reason for this is
that people got fed up of paneer. I am also aware that the passenger could
have asked for the spicy Indian daal-chawal-subzi-roti casserole, but they
often run out on this route if not pre-ordered. The kadhee could also be pitla.

d) I usually see 4 biscuits in a small packet, and the cabin crew give you
as many as you want. These are slightly sweet nan khatais, again, well known
in Mumbai.

e-f) They use the older A-340/300s on this route, often the one returned by
Virgin Nigeria. And also the Gatwick 747s, which are for the bozo charter
crowd headed for the cheaper Carib holidays. Terrible IFE either way on
aircraft which are being phased out, thus, placed on London-BOM.

g) That's again basic curds, bio-something, supposed to be ultra-healthy,
served with a kind of flat tasting biscuit like the nan khatai, called fan
in Bombay, which those who know about it know that you dunk it in your
tea/doffee and then chew on it.

+++

I think the passenger just didn't read the menu, and somehow got the Hindu
veg, and thus this letter. To a vegetarian Gujarati, this sort of food is heaven, as also to many other people who like their food spicy or tasty, not bland.

Personally, I enjoy food on VS a lot more than I do on BA. Although, on BA,
they have this 'raid the larder' option in Business Class which is
wonderful.

Best wishes/Veeresh Malik aka malikifx . . .

Yes, from our old friend Malik.

Thank you Malik. That was actually quite useful info, given how far that customer letter has been spreading around.

Well that takes the biscuit, one admittedly witty letter from a Y PAX and he is on the food panel.Lots and lots of food complaints from regular VSAu J PAX over the last few years off of here and a template letter response in about 3 months.

The VS reaction is simply firefighting. They know how powerful the press are - for AND against them. As a 'quick fix', this makes sense....

Seen to be doing something to address the problem
Good press for reacting positively
The smart-ass shuts the hell up or a while
The ball is in his court when future meals are worthy of complaint (even though, evidently from Malik's note, in this case it was not...)

I'd like to know the address for this passenger so that I can address any future complaints I have about the food service HE now underwrites to the correct place... [:w]

I understand too that the Telegraph is traditionally anti-VS (or at least, the reader comments to VS articles tend to be), so it's quite positive coverage from them.

Surely someone ought to point out the lack of cultural sensitivity displayed by this complaint and that rather than agreeing VS ought to be re-educating - courtesy of Malik's incredibly useful info? (More Telegraph Followup)

It's made it over here too. Was on BBC World News America tonight!

At a guess, it is probably the same as what was shown on BBC in UK. I thought it was great actually - they showed most of the new 25 Yrs Old commercial (never seen a Virgin Atlantic commercial on TV over here, only BA), and a light hearted reading of the letter.

Quite honestly, the flight was FROM India to the UK, so the guy should have been used to weird and random looking food (which I was after spending 2 weeks in India last year and loving everything I ate), and if he ordered the vegetarian Hindu option, then thats what he should have expected.

I don't believe it! Why the h*ll should it matter what class he was travelling in?
Typical of this site, and why I've cancelled my subscription.
Looks like all the Chavs are at the front on Virgin!

I tend to agree with you,not that chavs have taken over the front cabin or the JP is a chav (which he isn't) but that it shouldn't matter what class your flying in, however I think the point JP is trying to get across is that while J pax on here and on other sites have been complaining about the food, both choice and quality for the last few years with nothing being done except for a here's 10k miles, this person, with the help of this site and others has managed to bring it into the spotlight.

UK media being what it is has picked up on this and being a friend of the flying public has prompted a response from VS that could not be gotten before.

I am surprised that SRB responded to the letter, but given the amount of press it seems to have gotten wheeling him out by the PR dept seems like a good PR move.
