I have flown into, and out of both LGW and LHR.

Why are there two such airports this close to one another?

Please don't think I am dumb... as I live here in the US, I am just now aware of how all things operate in the UK

Because there are not enough slots for the aircraft who want to use LHR?

I guess its the same that New York/Manhatten hosts JFK EWR & LGA.....
maybe???

Too many flights

Then again not only does London have LHR and LGW but also STN LTN and LCY.

Duh!!!

Yep, that does make sense now! Sorry!

STN... is that Stansted??? Never been there, but my family whom live in Uxbridge have when they have European, or domestic flights.

Also is Stansted the airport they divert flights if there is a security issue? Seems I remember a VS flight diverting there recently.

Historically LHR had all the 'exclusive' routes from the big names! LGW recieved carriers who werent big enough to get LHR routes and all the UK charter operators.

LTN prior to its LCC growth was the charter airport for MON and BY. IN fact i remember numerous flights to MCO from LTN when younger, often via Gander or Bangor on a 757!

STN really was a cargo airport until the arrival of FR who have changed the face of the airport.OF course it is no different to LA with LAX and Long Beach- NYC with JFK,EWR,LGA- MCO with SFB and MCO. Although LHR is the busiest and LGW is the busiest single runway airport in the world!

Yep... I see your point.

Here in the LA Basin we have LAX which most of the international flights operate. Long Beach which has just recently become "airline" active. Jet Blue is the largest there. Ontario (ONT) which is about 40 miles to the east of LA. ONT mainly operates domestic flights. And then John Wayne (Orange County), again, mostly domestic flights.

Now they are looking to covert one of the retired Air Force Bases (George AFB) in the Hi Desert!
