Ah sorry yes - this being a VS site, when someone says "companion" we automatically think VS companion :). I've never found the Amex companion tickets to be that good - only marginally cheaper than two low cost tickets in the same class and then only one person earns miles. In fact we're flying SAA in Sept and we deliberately didn't go the Amex companion route because of this.

No problem. I was just getting excited by the thought that someone had actually found a good deal with an Amex companion fare :D

Hi

I am thinking of taking out this offer as 20k miles is a lot of spending or flying.

However I feel that £95 is a lot to pay for a charge card, of which after the initial spend I am no longer going to use.

Does the card have any worthwhile benefits apart from the 20k miles ? As I would hope so for a £95 fee...

20k miles for £95 is a no brainer even if you bin the card:D

Got my call about the card this weekend - the lady offered a platinum version - I queried the 20K miles and she said that the offer was transferable BUT the Platinum was £260!

I have gone with the Gold:D

As has been said before, the Amex plat is probably better value if you travel a lot. Full travel insurance for the whole family(even if you do not pay for your travel on the Plat card) a Priority Pass card and access to amex fine hotel and resorts programme, I paid for my card with one stay in NYC this year with the money saved.

If you dont plan on using the card after your initial purchase, remember to phone up and actually cancel the card though once you receive the miles otherwise it will cost you £95 every year.

Mine arrives yesterday morning. I assume I just have to go and buy something with it and they will do the rest? Or do they just credit 20k Reward Points for me to transfer?

That UC Reward flight to Vegas is sooo close now :D

Well a West Coast reward flight is probably closer given the difficulties of getting LAS reward flights in UC ;)

Yeah im planning on going out to SFO first and will return via SFO too. Want to see what all the fuss is about with the Clubhouse there. Im quite flexible with dates (any time within about a 3 month period) so availability will hopefully not be a problem.:)

SFO normally has great availability - up to 5 Gs on some routings...

hi everyone was wondering the same question as asked by stevendq which was about the amex gold card which was I assume I just have to go and buy something with it and they will do the rest? being they transfer the points to your flying club account Or do they just credit 20k Reward Points for me to transfer?
could someone post a quick reply to this question if they have a card thanks once again andy

Hi, Andy. When you make the first qualifying purchase Amex should credit you with the 20K points on your Amex account. You then transfer them, 1:1, to your FC account - you can do this online. You may have to prompt Amex - I did on a variation of this offer a while back, but the points do appear eventually.

Best wishes

The T&C of the offer actually say "Once approved for the American Express Gold Charge Card you will receive 20,000 Flying Club miles if the card is used for the first time before 31 October 2005"

I read that as, they will be creditted straight into your FC account, without having the bother of converting them from MR points.

Nick - now that you mention it you've prompted a distant memory and yes, you are quite right, I've mixed up two separate events here. The bonus miles I received from Amex did indeed find their way directly to my FC account.

Sorry - mea culpa. My excuse is an unnoticed brain-fart! :)

Hi all,

I made my first purchase on my AMEX card today. Any ideas how long the miles might take to get on my FC account? I have to say it wasn't as easy as I thought to spend on the card - tried to buy a new TV for £1000 online (ours blew up last night, much to Mr L's joy as we can now oust the old 25" tube for a huge LCD widescreen) but transaction was declined by AMEX on account of having to build up a credit rating on the card, as it has no limit. How frustrating?!! They have clearly checked me out as a 'safe' bet. Oh well, went and spent £18 in Sainsbury's instead and will just cancel it once I have the miles as they have narked me with their daft rules. [:(!]

Jacq

I assume the points will post once you have paid your first bill.

The vagaries of the Amex 'spending limit' are an oft discussed topic on the Amex board over at FT. Suffice to say Amex don't hand out 'unlimited' credit easily.. even on the higher priced cards. They seem to put a lot of emphasis on building a credit history. Clearly somehting you aren't going to do :D[8D]

The 20K FC points will make it all worthwhile though [y][y]

Cheers guys,

Indeed the miles will be worth it, esp as we ordered the TV anyway - getting it on Monday morning. Quite excited - what a muppet! [:I]

Hi All, 1st post here (though getting used to the FT board helps with these things!)...signed up for the AMEX 20k FC miles deal...but no miles yet. Spent a nominal amount nearly a month ago, linked my FC acct with AMEX/MR rewards and...nowt!...called AMEX and the latest was "just transfer 1k miles (the min.) to yr FC acct and that will trigger the 20k immediately". Did that and ....nowt!
Yes, well, seems odd. BTW that was the 3rd version of the process I was given by AMEX...won't bore with the others. Can anyone shed light on when/what is supposed to happen?

All help appreciated!

I ran into a few problem with AMEX and getting stuff credited,it seems to take them a little longer than most other companys to post points/miles to the accounts, though saying that I did have to call a couple of weeks ago about 5k points that went missing, two days later the points were back and I got a letter from them saying sorry

Welcome to V-Flyer JCEP.

A lot of us have migrated over here from 'the great FT' ;)

You have me a little concerned here. I am just getting to the end of my first billing cycle with the new card. I had assumed that the miles would be added automatically.

Like you, I have made a few small purchases on the card, but I am a LONG way from having the ability to transfer 1K MR points to FC.

I will let you know how it developes [}:)]

I'm amazed how quickly you got your cards!

I signed up about 5 days after the promotion was announced, and only got my card through the door today!

Hopefully my 20k miles will go through no problem - I'll monitor this thread with interest!
