Ive been on many flights with a piece of hand luggage (i.e a large holdall weighing about 5kgs), my handbag, a few carrier bags (duty free etc) and a laptop. I think many airlines recognise that a laptop tends to have to go in its carry case and not in the hand luggage and that its a seperate item from a handbag.

In total, im probably carrying about 16kgs of crap in my arms LOL but their main point of concern is whether your one piece of hand luggage weighs more than 6kg (if it does they tend to give you a VS ditty bag to spread stuff into anyway)

Sometimes its really hard not to get carried away, I always over pack stuff and take things I know I won't want or use, but what if I do!!

My bag can easily weigh 10-15 kgs, I am always asked to weigh it and they just stick a tag on it that says 30 in red (I presume it means under 30kgs) I have only been once told it was too heavy and so I told them that there was a camera and laptop in it. They said oh ok just take the laptop out of the bag and carry them onto the plane seperately.

Ummm - that'll probably be the warning on the label that says either gates close or be at the gate 30 mins before departure (can't remember which, it's a while since I had a bag stickered like that) ;)

Great topic I carry most of the stuff, for laptop read pda loaded with GPS and games. Digital camera and plenty of charged batteries.
Now a question Noise cancelling headphones - which ones, do they really work? and where is the best place to buy them UK or USA. I am in countdown mode to our first trip in UCS so it's 59 days to go and counting :D

Ooh, ooh - new one!

Playstation Portable, loaded with Mercury (the game) - v.cool ;)[8D]:D

As for NC Headphones, the ONLY complaint I've every heard about the Bose QuietComfort 2 (QC2)'s is the price - the technology is perfect, and I use mine on every trip.

I agree about the price, I had read so much about them I looked them up - Big Mistake. This holiday is costing me an arm and several legs as it is. The earache from she who must be obeyed because I booked us UCS is bad enough if I said I spent another £300 on a pair of headphones I think I would be linched[xx(]

Easily solved - buy them when you're in the US - $299 ;)

... just hurry - that $'s heading south by the hour at the moment... [:0][:(]

I knew that my Citibank USD account would come good one day. All those dollars bought at 1.90 to spend at leisure.

Nice one Ian, but...

"A monthly service charge of $20 on each US$ Current Account will be levied where the credit balance, across your UK Citibank relationship, falls below the currency equivalent of £2000. This will be calculated, at the end of the monthly period, by applying the currency exchange rate on that day to the average balances in your UK Citibank accounts."

Terms & Conditions

Ouch... [:0] I'm not sure I'd want £2k sat earning nothing in a secondary account all the time.

Dave, Sony make some (the NCxxx range), usually between £40-80, but I've heard mixed reviews on them.

Basically, there are loads around and a lot of manufacturers are bringing models out now (as they've just "noticed" there might be a market for that sort of thing... ;) )

The ones that I HAVE heard lots of good reviews about are the Sennheiser PXC-xxx Range. My friend has the 300's (picked up at somewhere like Circuit City, I think for about $180), and he loves them. They're a lot smaller than the QC2's as well.

I'm also encouraged by the fact that Sennheiser make Noise-Cancelling Aviation Headsets, (as do Bose), so their technology is based on a good understanding of how to remove background noise.

Thanks Paul. I was looking at the Sennhauser ones on the net this morning. I just would like someone who has brought a pair to say that they are OK.

OK, well, as I said - my friend loves his. Other places for opinions would be one of the many threads on FT (this one is a good starting point), or Amazon.

If you look at the bottom of the page, you'll find customer's own opinions of both the PXC-250 and PXC-300

You'll see they both get generally good reviews.

Dave - I have both the Sennheiser PXC-250 and the Bose noise cancelling - in my opinion the Bose just have the edge - mainly because they cup the whole ear and cut out just a little more background noise than the Sennheiser, and this contributes to them having the edge on base in particular. I bought the Sennheiser PXC-250 because of the size, the Bose ones are just to big for trips when trying to do hand luggage only (of which I do a lot even though VS's policy in PE particuarly drives me mad [}:)]) - and at about a third of the price of the Bose I think they are also excellent and have very good sound quality.

Hope that helps
